Is it possible to shorten the shift travel on my gearbox (CEP in a C4 TDI)?
(are extremely long)
Please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English.

You can cut off 6cm of your gear lever.
Best regards, Rainer.

I was already expecting that answer.
But that's exactly what I didn't mean.

Hi,
"Some people in the Polo forum have come up with a solution, although it's not designed for cable-operated gearboxes. However, the basic idea should work, and it's probably even simpler. They shift the "pivot point" of the lever upwards, which makes the lower part longer. This results in the same actuation distances being achieved with smaller lever angles – which is exactly the goal."
If we apply this to a cable-operated system, you would essentially need to modify the control box that actuates the cables so that this effect occurs. This would involve raising the pivot point of the lever, allowing the same cable pull to result in smaller lever movements.
You can't bypass the principle of leverage with that; it will simply require more force.

Hi Jan,
As far as I know, the C4 Audi 100 doesn't have a cable-operated gear shift, but rather shift rods.

The company www.bmracing.com offers gear shift levers for various vehicles, which reduce the shift travel by 25-50%. Gruß Thomas

Hi,
Just to get the basic idea.
When I look at a rally car or something similar, it's often even longer than the standard production version.
What's the point of shortening the gear stick then?
If reducing the throw requires more force, wouldn't it be appropriate to lengthen the lever?
Greetings.

Hi,
Well, I think in the case of racing or rally applications, it's probably less about having comfortable shifting with minimal effort.
It probably depends more on shortening the switching time through a shorter switching path (less interruption of traction force, etc.).
...and you have your hands free for longer to hold the steering wheel...

You've misunderstood something!
It's not the lever itself that's being shortened, but the travel of the gear lever, which allows for faster gear changes (as Markus already explained)!!
The set for my Jetta also included a gear shift knob extension to bring the gear shift lever closer to the steering wheel. However, you then need to shorten the shift travel using the linkage on the transmission.
Modern rally cars often have sequential gearboxes, which offer complete freedom in terms of gear shifting using the lever. The gear levers themselves are also typically very long.
Something else.
Anyone who wants to install a shorter cable routing system should be aware of two things:
The amount of force required to shift gears is significantly higher, and a jerky transmission doesn't exactly make things easier.
"The load on the synchronizer rings of the gearbox is significantly higher due to the potentially faster shifting. This can sometimes cause a loud clunking noise when shifting, which increases wear and tear inside the gearbox. I've destroyed numerous gearboxes and drive shafts in my rally car!" Gruß Bertil

Hi,
I was just wondering why people would cut off the gear stick and then screw on a generic knob. (Rainer suggested this).
I understand what you mean about the faster shifting.
Therefore, I also thought that when shortening the throw of the lever, the lever arm would be increased due to the leverage effect.
So far, I've only removed that stupid switch weight from my own setup.
Regardless, what I was mainly concerned about was the cutting.
Naja. See you later.

You can certainly do that, but then you won't have gained anything.
Okay, gib mir den deutschen Text.
- First, by modifying the transmission components responsible for gear selection, the shift travel from 1st to 2nd gear is reduced from 10cm to 5cm.
- Now, it naturally becomes "more difficult" to shift gears, and more force is required to change gears.
- If you extend the gear lever to require less force, the gear throw will simultaneously become longer...
Best regards, Rainer.
