Hello everyone,
I have an Octavia TDI with an AGR engine, 90 horsepower, manufactured in 1998.
To adjust the injection timing, you need to adjust the timing wheel on the injection pump. I've never done this job before, and I see a lot of potential sources of error.
Am I correct in assuming that, in principle, you can only properly access one of the three bolts at a time without having to disassemble more than just the timing belt cover, which would actually be sufficient?
How do I hold the timing pulley in place while tightening the screws? Is there a special tool for this? Do I hold the large nut in the center with a wrench (hoping it won't move), or does tightening the screws put stress on the timing belt?
Is a torque of 20 Nm sufficient to securely hold the timing belt pulley during the initial test run (adjustment check)?
Is it really as much of a test of patience as some reports describe?
I would appreciate it if one or two experienced professionals could offer some helpful advice.
Greetings.
Jens.

Hello,
Please read the technical articles and instructions. Furthermore, there has been a lot of discussion about this topic in the forum.
Just use the search function. Tschüss

Hello Michael II and others,
I've gone through the forum and the 11MB ZIP file of the old forum using the search function, and I've also looked at the instructions on this page, but... none of my questions were answered. Assuming I haven't missed anything...
It is particularly important to consider how to secure the pump pulley wheel when tightening the stretch bolts. Is there a risk of overloading or damaging the timing belt if the pulley wheel is only held in place by the timing belt itself, and not properly secured?
Greetings.
Jens.

Sure. It makes sense to lock the specific wheel where the screw is located when tightening it. What's the problem with that?
No one is asking you to tighten the crankshaft to secure the camshaft sprocket screw .

Hello Rainer,
Thank you very much for the quick response.
Here's one more question about securing things: What's the best way to lock the timing pulley of the fuel injection pump? Do I need a special tool for this, similar to the one used to secure the timing pulley of the camshaft? Or is there a better/easier solution that I'm not seeing simply because of my lack of experience?
Greetings.
Jens.

Hello,
http://www.rasender-killer.de/usenet/zahnriemen_2/index.htm
Apparently, you haven't read or understood this yet.
I'm sorry to say this, but if the menu clearly states "TDI Timing Belt Replacement Instructions" and you can't understand that, then it's probably a lost cause.
Therefore, I see no further need to respond to your questions.
Best regards, Rainer.

Greetings, Rainer |
The instructions for replacing the timing belt are certainly informative, but they leave some questions unanswered for the experienced amateur mechanic. Specifically: Is the purpose of the locking pin used to secure the injection pump wheel simply to prevent it from rotating when the timing belt is removed, or does the pin also serve as a counter-hold when loosening or tightening the three mounting screws? In my opinion, this is not clear from the instructions, even though I have searched for it extensively.
I hope I haven't lost my touch. But unfortunately, I'm not a professional. And as mentioned in another thread, I found the timing belt replacement on the gasoline engine (PF: 1.8l 107 hp, Digifant) to be a relatively easy task.
Perhaps a FAQ about timing belt replacement would be helpful. I certainly have enough questions.

Hello,
I have no idea what the Octavia looks like, but in the case of...
Versions with the 3 screws that secure the gear.
You can hold the ESP wave using a hexagonal prism or a flattened surface with a suitable tool.
Hold the adjustable wrench and/or rotate it against the gear - do not confuse it with the shaft screw!
The 20 Nm is sufficient during the adjustment phase, but not otherwise.
'forgot to tighten. By the way, there are 2 versions of the...'
There are three types of screws: one version are expansion screws that need to be replaced, while the other version can be reused.
TIP - Before the first twist, align the position with a...
Pencil sketch marking - I usually use...
approximately half the width of a pencil lead.
Success achieved.
Best regards,
Jürgen

Hello,
mcgregg hit the nail on the head and perfectly expressed what I meant!! I've even started to doubt my ability to read...
Thank you to Jürgen for the valuable tips. With this information, I will now try a 'tuning' process. These are exactly the good, practical tips that I was hoping to get (Greetings to Rainer K. ).
Best regards.
Jens.

Hello,
Please note:
Set screws with a relieved thread shank.
The injector pump rotor needs to be replaced (the replacement part number for the injector pump rotor is 038 130 111 A).
Fastening screws without a thread-cutting feature on the threaded shank.
Spouts do not need to be replaced (replacement part number).
The fuel injection pump rotor is part number 038 130 111 B. Tschüss
