Sunroof Noises: Causes and Solutions

After now exceeding 115,000 km, the 1J model is starting to show its age. I'm experiencing a creaking noise above me when driving over slight road imperfections, as if something is straining. I've ruled out the door seals, as the noise doesn't go away when applying pressure. The plastic guides on the sunroof also don't seem to be the cause, and the rails are lubricated. Subjectively, the noise seems to be coming from further back, from the area where the sunroof retracts when opening. I can't reproduce the noise by pressing on anything, nor can I stop it by pressing.

Does anyone recognize these sounds? They're quite new and really annoying. Any ideas before I start taking apart the ceiling?

My G3 (my colleague has one, and I drove it again this weekend) is making a cracking sound with the SD card.
Everything was perfectly greased, but it still squeaks.

However, it can sometimes be resolved by opening and closing it again, and certainly by applying pressure to the glass in the cracking area.

It doesn't quite fit with the image you're trying to project.

I hadn't found the real cause until the sale, and the colleague is immune to noises coming from the car .

It doesn't seem to be related to the glass lid, because the noise is the same regardless of its position. Since the noise is really annoying, it has to be fixed!

But here's a tip for locating the source of the noise.

Hab in einem früheren Wagen von mir auch so ein nerviges Geräusch gehabt. War der Meinung das es auch vom Himmel kommt. Hab auch gedrückt, gemacht und getan. Nix helped.

Ultimately, it wasn't the weather's fault.

The source of all the trouble was a rattling drawer located under the driver's seat.
Due to reflections, it appeared as if the light was coming from above.


The noises in a car often originate from somewhere completely different than you might think.
It's better to search for the noise with two people. One person drives, and the other person tries to locate the source.

Well... it wasn't actually the sunroof, and the acoustics in the Golf also played a trick on me. Now I've located the main culprit. It's the rear right C-pillar trim... I'm curious to see what's underneath, because when I tap it lightly, it rattles quite a bit...

It's clipped to the body with some very large and robust metal clips.

Perhaps it's loose and now the squeaking monkey is making a metal-on-metal sound.
