Golf 1J: Engine Knocking Noise - Diagnosis & Repair (Solution)

Tapping noises when idling/at standstill.

Rattling/clattering noises coming from the transmission when the vehicle is stationary, the engine is idling, and the engine is cold.
The noises disappear when the 5th gear is engaged by the hand lever and when the clutch pedal is pressed.

Cause:
Sounds ("clattering") from the synchronizer ring, 5th gear.

Vibrations generated by the engine are transmitted through the transmission input shaft/drive shaft to the transmission, causing vibrations in the gears that are not currently engaged.

Unfavorable tolerances in the transmission, dual-mass flywheel, and clutch disc exacerbate this phenomenon. Noises are usually louder in cold engines.

Serial solution:
Reinforced locking plate spring in the synchronizer hub for 5th gear, starting from transmission production date 28111.
