Hello everyone,
I'm currently trying to remove my water pump because it's leaking excessively after replacing the 'small belt,' more than it ever did before. The vehicle's technology is from 1996, and the engine is a 1Z.
I'm not really making any progress. On the side of the pulley (which cannot be detached), I found and loosened 4 screws on the water pump. The alternator has been removed, and the power steering pump has been disconnected. I've removed the timing belt cover, but underneath there's another plastic part that obstructs my view of any potential additional screws (on the pulley side). This plastic cover actually covers the lower pulleys of the timing belt. (How can I remove this cover without causing damage and without having to mess with the timing belt?)
Does anyone happen to have a guide, or perhaps excerpts from a manual? I would be very grateful for a quick response.
Best regards,
Christian
EDIT:
The lower cover is removed, and the impeller of the water pump as well. This makes the remaining screws of the pump housing visible. However, a new problem arises. Some screws are blocked by the impeller of the fuel injection pump, and even if they can be loosened, the water pump cannot be pulled out. What should be done next? Removing the timing belt and disassembling the impeller of the fuel injection pump seems like a drastic solution. Surely there must be an easier way?!
Christian.

The pump can remain connected, and the timing belt as well.
Only the timing belt cover needs to be removed.
Actually, it's not a hit.
Best regards, Efistho.

The timing belt cover is off, but as mentioned, the screws on the pump (on the drive pulley side) are covered by a roller that the timing belt runs over on the back. This roller is positioned so close to the pump that the pump cannot be removed, as the roller is directly in front of it.
There has to be a solution...

If I recall correctly, the two screws located at the top, facing towards the front of the vehicle, need to be removed.
By removing the screws that are accessible from the direction of the timing belt, you are only disassembling the pump.
Best regards, Micha.

The timing chain sprocket needs to be removed. Consequently, the timing belt also needs to be removed. Take a look at the new water pump, and then everything should be clear.

Okay, the Unnsin, ZR, and the intermediate shaft gear STAY in place! Only remove the "Reinemscheibe" (a specific type of disc) from the water pump. Behind it, there's a screw that holds the water pump in place. Then, remove the 4 large screws, and the water pump will come out. I've done this at least 17 times before!

I didn't even try, because the mounting screw for the lower timing belt cover makes it impossible to thread the cable through!

If you only want to change the deployment, LZ is right.
I have never done that before, because the entire pump is cheaper.
If you are completely replacing the pump, including the housing, you don't need to remove the timing belt.
Best regards,

I'm completely baffled by what T2sufer is talking about. In the picture from LZ, it's very clear that 3 of the many screws on the water pump are obscured by the balancing wheel (which is removed in the picture) and cannot be unscrewed.
I also couldn't identify any screws, including large ones, when the wheel of the WaPu was removed.
Conclusion:
The Golf is still propped up. I'm still missing 3 screws before I can remove the water pump housing, and I'm afraid I'll have to remove the idler pulley on the timing belt (along with all the associated work).
@T3sufer:
Please save me some trouble and clearly specify which screws you are referring to and where they are located. I would really appreciate it, as I wasn't planning on working on the timing belt.
EDIT:
I just want to exchange the nozzle, I already have one. Unfortunately, I didn't ask if a complete pump would be cheaper. I paid a whopping 46€ for the nozzle.
If I could remove the pump, including its housing, that would also be helpful. At least then I could assemble the thing properly on the table.

Okay, we're talking about a replacement installation: If you don't have an A/C compressor and cooler, you can remove the entire pump assembly from the engine block by disassembling the alternator bracket and the power steering pump. This is done from the front. Then, the replacement pump you purchased can be installed into the detached housing and reassembled.

I always replace the entire water pump assembly, buying it as a complete unit. It's not actually more expensive than replacing just the pump without the housing! As you can see in the picture, it looks like you only want to remove the pump without the housing, which would require removing the ZR (timing chain) and the intermediate shaft gear. However, if you want to avoid removing the ZR, the only option is to replace the entire water pump housing.

Okay, I'll try that.
As soon as I remove the pump, I'll leave a little instruction manual for future generations...

INSTRUCTIONS FOR REPLACING THE WATER PUMP ON A GOLF 3 1Z
1. Rear passenger side tire deflated.
2. Remove the air filter housing.
3. Loosen the tensioner pulley and remove the large V-belt.
3. Remove the alternator.
5. Disconnect the climate control compressor (it may be stuck).
6. (Starting from underneath the car) Remove the adjustment screw for the serpentine belt, as well as the locking screw, the two vertical screws located below the power steering pump, and the screw that acts as a pivot for belt tension (all 13mm). The power steering pump is now hanging freely downwards (it is advisable to support it).
7. In the engine compartment, remove the cast part to which the alternator (Lima) and air conditioning compressor were attached (4 nuts + 1 screw, all 13mm).
8. Now the water pump is free; you only need to remove the three hoses. Use a 19mm wrench to remove the three 'guide screws' and one regular 19mm bolt. Then, use a 10mm wrench to remove the mounting screw for the lower timing belt cover, and you'll have the pump in your hand.
Install it in reverse.
Thank you everyone, piece by piece, the puzzle has been solved.
Christian.
