Hi everyone,

I've noticed a couple of inconsistencies in the multi-function display (MFD) of my car's instrument cluster. I wanted to ask if they could indicate any problems and, if so, what kind of problems they might be.

The vehicle is a Skoda O2, 103 kW, without a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), engine code: BKD.

Specifically, the speed setting in the MSG is 830 rpm. In the measurement data blocks of the MSG, the speed fluctuates between 819 and 840.
So far, so good.
However, the tachometer in the instrument cluster shows 800 rpm. Furthermore, the outside temperature reading on the same instrument cluster is always incorrect, often deviating by 3-15 degrees.
Can someone tell me why this is the case?

Ok, hab etwas unklar gefragt. Sorry.
The question is, what influence the two readings from the combination instrument might have on the engine, performance, and fuel consumption.
Is the lower engine speed and high outside temperature evaluated by the engine control unit (ECU), or are these factors not linked at all?

Hello,

"In my opinion, the RPM reading in the instrument cluster is only for display purposes. I've also noticed that there are often different RPM values compared to the ones shown in the engine control unit (ECU). However, I can't imagine that these differences have any impact on performance or fuel consumption."
The display of the outside temperature seems quite strange, especially when it shows such large fluctuations. A range of 3-15 degrees Celsius is already a huge difference. Compared to which value is this difference being referenced?
Providing AI with the actual outdoor temperature (thermometer).
AI to be displayed in the MFA?
I can imagine that the sensor might be faulty. However, even in that case, I don't see any impact on performance or fuel consumption. As far as I know, the automatic climate control system adjusts itself based on the outside temperature reading.

Why are you asking if the values have something to do with the engine? Did you notice something that shouldn't be there? (Performance, fuel consumption)

Maik.

Hi MMaik,

The temperature difference in relation to the MFA.
The reason for my investigation is increased fuel consumption.
At 110,000 km, a new turbocharger was installed. For the first 2-3,000 km, I experienced very good fuel consumption of 6-6.5 liters per 100 km in mixed taxi operation (stop-and-go, free roads in the evenings, country roads).
The fuel consumption was 1 liter less than with the old turbo.
Now I've reached 180,000 km. Since then, almost 9 months have passed, and the fuel consumption has been steadily increasing.
Currently, it consumes 9-10 liters. In pure city traffic, it even consumes 11 icon_sad.gif.

The timing belt was recently replaced because the second workshop claimed that the timing settings from the first workshop were incorrect, and since it had already been driven for 30,000 km since the replacement, it was better to replace the belt completely.
Looking back, it was obviously a lie. A 2.0L 16-valve engine wouldn't be able to run for even 1000 km with a misaligned timing belt. This was confirmed to me by three different mechanics, as well as a thread in an online forum.

Then the LMM (lambda sensor) and AGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve were replaced. Surprisingly, after replacing the AGR valve, the fuel consumption was lower again, but two days later, the same problem started again.
No error message and that's it.

The only error occurred 3 days ago. During a full-load test, it went into emergency mode once: the boost pressure control exceeded the permissible difference.
Never before, and never again.
Now I'm not sure if this error only appears occasionally. Or if I can at least (I still have a few days of warranty) use it as an argument to have the turbocharger replaced.

Since the consumption is constantly increasing, but there are no error entries, I am checking all inconsistencies in the control units.

Unfortunately, I also had to realize that the workshops in my area are completely incapable of performing their jobs properly.
Many unanswered questions and incorrect answers have demonstrated that even experienced mechanics are overwhelmed by the electronics of modern vehicles.
Repeated complaints to Skoda Auto have also yielded no results. I was repeatedly referred to service partners, who all claimed to have the "necessary equipment and expertise" to assist me.

It's sad that people can call themselves "masters" while having very little knowledge of the subject matter.

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

"Last example:"
The instrument cluster in my brother's car (Touran, also with BKD engine) has a "shadow" in the adaptation. After logging in with the code 12233 (previously, it showed "access permission required"), the error message "Channel number not available" appears in the channels that should be displayed. I sent my brother to his workshop with this information so that it could be checked.

My brother came back with this statement: "The expert says the MSG is fine. They're just adjusting, and everything is working out. He says maybe their brother is using faulty diagnostic software – you wouldn't be able to get results from everyone with that."
D.
It seemed strange to me. Why should I be able to access VCDS with 4 different BKD engines, one of which is a Touran with the same engine control unit and an additional taxi control unit, and then the diagnostic tool should be wrong for just one of them?

Yesterday, my brother had his car inspected again, so I stopped by the workshop to see if the "adjustment" they made actually worked.
The mechanic who was performing the inspection didn't want to touch anything because it was new, and he didn't want to break anything.
After that, I called a technician over and explained to him in detail exactly what was "defective."
He attached the diagnostic tool, fiddled with it a bit, and then said, "See, it's showing everything correctly. We checked that last time, remember?"
What he displayed were the MWB of the engine control unit icon_smile.gif.
So, I had to explain to him again that I was talking about the adjustment, not the measurement blocks.
At that point, the master was hesitant. He wouldn't go in there. The engine is running, and if it stops, something else will break.
Only after I reassured him and told him that I would guarantee that nothing could break did he log in and select the channels one by one. And what appeared? Error: Channel number not found.

"Our workshops have all the necessary equipment and expertise to solve your problem."

Should we laugh or cry about this...?

Yes, I completely agree. All you can do is cry... there's nothing else you can do!
"Some authorized repair shops in my area have problems ordering parts, especially if you don't have the part number readily available. For example, I needed a new exhaust manifold, and the parts department said, "We don't have anything like that." I had to remove the manifold myself, drive it to the shop, and show it to them. Then, they found it, but it wasn't listed under "exhaust manifold" in their parts catalog; it was listed under "muffler manifold" instead. You have to wonder what kind of experience these people have!"

Regarding your charge pressure differential:
I had the same problem last week. I replaced the MAF sensor, the N75 valve, the EGR valve, vacuum hoses, and a few other things. Nothing worked until I replaced the MAF sensor a second time, and since then I haven't had any more problems.

This doesn't mean that your new LMM is also defective, but it's something to keep in mind. You should check with your parts supplier, the one who currently supplies the part, to see if you can get a replacement for free.

I don't know how susceptible new turbos are to problems; I haven't had any experience with them yet.

Regards,
Maik.

Okay, I'll schedule an appointment for tomorrow. The warranty expired on Friday, and there are quite a few issues with the car. It's going to be a whole list of things for them to work on.
Taxis and VW technology somehow don't quite go together icon_evil.gif.
