VAG-COM Help: Beginner's Guide & Troubleshooting

Even though this question might have been asked many times before, I still need to ask.

I've been using the VAG-COM 303 shareware version so far and always looked up the error codes. I haven't been interested in anything more than that. However, things have changed since I bought the 3BG Passat. I'm having some minor issues with engine misfires at idle. The solution is being discussed in another thread. For example, someone suggested increasing the idle speed. I've briefly skimmed through some articles, and I can't find a specific guide for this in the search results. It seems you need to go to the "Adaptation" section in the engine control unit and then channel 2. There, the value is 32768. I changed it to 32788, and sure enough, the engine is now running at about 20 RPM higher. Is it always just a matter of trial and error, or are there specific values for this?

Next problem:

Since the Passat and my future cars will likely have more and more control units and electronics, I'm interested in how to access the login codes for these control units. I read somewhere that for newer vehicles, this can only be done through VW. However, I can't even find anything about the 3BG model. I've already tried the code "12233" on the engine control unit, but it didn't work. Or do I need the full version of the software?

So, that brings me to the next question.

Is it worth buying the full version as a hobbyist? So, can I then read out everything, program, display... whatever I want? I'm just asking because I don't want to end up in a situation where it's said: "Well, that only works with VW, and you need the code for that, and there's also (only VW) for that, and so on." I'd really like to do everything myself and not have to go back to the workshop. Adjusting the volume of the parking assist or programming the comfort control unit would be interesting. Can you always access it without logging in?

Last question:

What system do you recommend? We have a wide variety of VW, Audi, and Seat models in our inventory, ranging from a 1991 Passat to a 1994 Polo, a 1996 Golf, a 1999 Passat, a 1999 T4 with 111 kW, a 2001 Passat 3BG, a 2005 Toledo, and a 2007 Audi A4, among others.

All of them must be readable and programmable. The A4 model, in particular, had its share of problems.

Basically, you can do the same things with it as a workshop, and even more, with the exception of things related to theft prevention (like Vehicle Security Systems, etc.).

Coding assistance is also included in the current VAG-COM (now called VCDS, the current version is 805.1).

Logins like "12233" unlock various adjustment options depending on the engine control unit (ECU) installed, and the ECU itself determines which options are available.

I just wanted to change the title of the topic because it might be misleading. However, I couldn't manage to do that. That's why I'm starting a new thread.

Regarding the codes again. Is it difficult to access them because VW is controlling it, or why isn't everything simply published?
Do you only need the code for the engine control unit, or do other components also have locks that require codes?

- Logins/Security Access
- normal encoding
- long coding

VCDS already indicates exactly what effect each setting has. However, not all login procedures are documented, including those for the dealer's workshop tool.
