Hello,

What is the exact path of the air being drawn in, from the air intake to the combustion chamber, including the mass airflow sensor (MAF), intercooler, turbocharger, intake manifold, etc.?

Regards,

Thomas.

"Small addition that may be important for potential extensions:"
(applies to the 1Z)

Air filter.
LMM
Turbocharger (compressor side).
LLK
>> Charge air temperature measurement.
Intake manifold.
>> Boost pressure measurement.
Combustion chambers.
Exhaust manifold.
Turbocharger (turbine side).
CAT.
- Mid-silencer icon_smile.gif
Muffler.

The two additions show that a more effective LLK (LL being colder but also denser, which results in less pressure) should actually be compensated for by the STG (waste heat recovery unit) because the pressure drops at the intake manifold.

The question is whether the engine control unit (ECU) "knows" the "system-defined" parameters and is surprised by the more efficient liquid cooling system, possibly triggering a limp-home mode.

who still wants to spray water in front of the LLK (likely referring to a specific type of equipment or vehicle).

Hi Martin,

In some (newer) engines, the boost pressure and temperature measurements are also taken using a combination sensor located at the top of the intercooler (not on the 1Z icon_wink.gif).

Wow icon_eek.gif, I forgot! I also can't remember a center silencer on my Golf3 1Z - there was only the catalytic converter.

Thank you everyone.

I think you've been a great help. I'm having a problem where my car has very little power (maximum speed ~ 180 km/h), and I've discovered that the pressure hose connecting the intercooler to the intake manifold has a hole. I hope this explains things, because the faulty hose is likely causing the mass airflow sensor (MAF) to send an incorrect signal to the engine control unit (ECU), and also means that only some of the already compressed air is entering the combustion chambers, while the rest is being blown away.

Regards,

Thomas.

@ Bertil

Yes, that's correct regarding the combination sensor (which should then be located at the output and therefore also detect the additional power of the LLK).

The parts of the 1Z exhaust:

Turbo.
Flexible exhaust pipe with catalytic converter (initially available as a separate replacement part).
Double clamp.
Pipe to the H-axis.
MSD with ESD (first disconnect from the axle, then install a double clamp).

"That means that if a flexible pipe is defective, 'everything in the front' needs to be replaced -> 700 EUR!!!"

That's how it is for me icon_sad.gif.

Yes.

"Today, I replaced the pressure hose from the LLK (likely referring to a coolant reservoir) to the intake manifold, and the car is running well again. But I was really shocked by the amount of gunk that was built up inside that hose!"

Is this also related to the AGR (Abgasrückführung) system, or does the exhaust gas mixing happen later, specifically in the intake manifold?

Regards,

Thomas.

Hi Klopfer.

If you're referring to the oil in the intercooler pipes, it's likely due to the crankcase ventilation system. The oil vapors from the crankcase and cylinder head are recirculated back into the intake manifold to prevent them from being released into the environment. That's the hose that connects to the pipe located between the mass airflow sensor (MAF) and the turbocharger.

Best regards, Golfmann.
