In Lanz's last post, it states that there is no real pre-lift pump in BMW vehicles. |
For the skeptics, here's an excerpt from the WDS (schematics).
Pre-charge pump DDE 3.0
The pre-lift pump is located in the fuel tank. It is switched on and off via a relay and pumps the fuel through the fuel filter to the fuel injection pump.
Even if the pre-feed pump fails, the engine will continue to run because the injection pump has its own rotary vane feed pump. However, this can lead to a sudden engine stall while driving.
Error handling.
The relay and the relay's control are monitored, but the pump itself is not. In the event of a fault, error code 73 "fuel pre-pump" will be stored.
And here's the link to the online electronic parts catalog (ETK) for my vehicle.

If that weren't a genuine pre-lift pump, then when the engine was started, fuel wouldn't have leaked out of the oil drain line; perhaps a few drops, but the rest would have drained back into the tank due to gravity. It might be difficult to admit, but in this case, BMW has built something decent, unlike Audi. Gruß Christian

You checked the engine control unit for diagnostic codes. However, that doesn't mean that there are no error codes stored in the pump control unit's memory.
For older VP44 engines, Bosch offers an adapter connector for the pump control unit, which allows access to it as well.
Please carefully check all the connections again, and see if the engine control unit (ECU) is receiving a speed signal. If it is, the variable valve timing (VVT) system should be active during startup. If not, no fuel will be injected because the ECU will believe that the engine is not running. selber schrauben - statt Werkstattpfusch

Basically, the M47 is a special case.
It has an in-tank pump, so the ESP (Electric Submersible Pump) does not need to be vented!
Turning the ignition on for 60 seconds is sufficient.
If the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) is defective, there will be an error message; error communicating with the pump control unit.
I can rule out a faulty ESP (Electronic Stability Program).
Is it possible that...?
-Was ist, wenn the cable of the NBF was accidentally pinched during the installation of the bend?
Happens very often; Place the cable into the rubber guide of the injection line and that's it.
- Were the ignition timing and the overlap timing of the pump confused?
The pump's sprocket has no markings!
Check the static baseline settings!!
The upper part actually only happens if you turn the motor at the crankshaft and don't count how many times you've turned it.
A rotation of the crankshaft by 360 degrees should also be considered, as the ignition timing may not always correspond to top dead center (TDC).
-Was the hydraulic chain tensioner properly secured?
If this is not the case, the chain has jumped a tooth, and the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) is therefore misaligned.
Default setting!

I don't think this error would occur if there's a mechanical failure inside the pump. MfG. Michael

This situation might be a special case for BMW, whereas hundreds of thousands of people have experienced this with the A6.
At Audi, because the built-in fuel pump is often unreliable, an external pump is used for bleeding the fuel system.
I didn't write that you should simultaneously bleed and start the engine just for fun, have you tried it????????
You can disconnect the connector of the needle lift sensor, and the engine will still run, unless BMW has programmed it to prevent this.
"If the valve timing were incorrect, the 'loose' injector would be spraying even more. You can also tell by the smoke coming from the exhaust."
Typically, the control unit fails due to broken connections, often when someone is working on the pump or the motor.
You can also attach the cable to the solenoid valve to an Oskar using a clamp.
"Either send the whole thing to Bosch." Gruß Christian

This engine has two timing chains: one from the crankshaft to the exhaust camshaft, and from there to the intake camshaft.
I secured the tensioner for the upper chain, but not the lower one. I didn't rotate the engine while it was disassembled, and I followed the original repair manual.
The timing for the crankshaft and camshaft is correct. I haven't adjusted the timing for the pump, but I also haven't checked it. VCDS

I would like to set a static configuration for the ESP.
Were the injector lines tightened according to the specified torque?
A change in the cross-section would then be conceivable.

If, with an expanded electronic stability control (ESC) system connected and a fuel line attached, no diesel fuel is coming out of the nozzle, but fuel does spray when the ESC system is disconnected, then the pump pressure is too low.
Possible errors: Air in the pump; Trost 60 sec. - bleed air from the pump using the pre-pump.
Power supply for the ESP --> Is the fuse OK?
Pump is defective.
Pre-charge pump failure, pump still running.
Let's test if there are any error codes stored in the system by disconnecting the ESP connector.
I once had a 5-series with a CR engine that sometimes wouldn't start, even though BMW had installed a new high-pressure fuel pump!
The reason was the pre-charging pump, which occasionally failed to generate the required pre-charge pressure of 300 mbar.
Unfortunately, I only know the VP 37 engine from BMW. Could you please post a photo of the ESP? Are you sure it's a VP 44? NA,Gehörlose wie ich können auch Schrauben! Ihr HÖRT ich FÜHLE! The VP 37 is an axial piston pump, while the E46 definitely has a radial piston pump. I don't have a photo available at the moment. VCDS

There was also a racing version of the 320d that used a VP44 fuel injection system. Gruß Christian
