Hello, fellow diesel enthusiasts!
For my Passat (model 3B, manufactured in 07/97, 1.9 TDI engine, code AHU), the timing belt needs to be replaced after 180,000 km, and I'm shocked by the price!
I visited two VW workshops, and they both quoted prices of €355 and €450. ATU charges €470, and a small, independent workshop quoted €430.
Are these normal prices?
Just the price difference at VW!
Does anyone know of a workshop in the Hamburg area (within a +/- 150km radius) that offers good service at a reasonable price?
Thank you in advance!
Regards,
Andreas.

Hello Andreas,
The prices are standard.
When comparing prices, make sure that not only the timing belt, but also all tensioner and idler pulleys are replaced.
Similarly, after 180,000 km, it is recommended to replace the water pump, especially if it is driven by the timing belt on your engine.
For my car's timing belt replacement, the cost of the parts – including the timing belt kit, ribbed belt, water pump, and small parts – was around 200 euros. Your costs will likely be similar.
Best regards, Rainer.
