Hello everyone!
I'm thinking about buying a diagnostic system. I'm considering whether to buy the basic package (159,-) or the semi-professional system.
Besides a general interest in TDI engines, I want to investigate a problem with my Golf III 1.9 TDI 1Z, manufactured in 1995. I installed a new engine control unit (ECU), but it doesn't seem to be fully compatible. I've heard that ECUs can be programmed for specific engines. Can I do this with the basic equipment I have, or do I need something more professional? Also, the engine doesn't run as smoothly as it used to. The previous owner had a chip installed, and I'd like to investigate all the potential issues.
I'm generally looking to get familiar with the topic first, so I'm leaning towards a more basic and affordable setup. What would you recommend?
Best regards and thank you for your help.
Tobi.

Hi,
Think about what cars you (or your partner, friends, etc.) will be driving today and in three years. Eventually, your Golf will reach the end of its life, be in an accident, or something else will happen (like with my Audi). That's why I bought the professional version with CAN bus integration. For me, this is planning for the future.
If you're looking to switch from a Golf to a different brand, then the basic equipment is usually what matters most.
Regarding the MSG (Modular Schnittstellen- und Diagnosegerät), you need one that is compatible and can be programmed for your specific vehicle and engine type. Otherwise, even the most user-friendly VCDS software won't be effective.

I would recommend starting with the basic equipment. I just got it myself and I'm very happy with it.
Best regards, Tobi

I have to agree with Herbert; you should definitely go for the CAN/Profi version!
If you're interested, you can usually get integrated into a company very quickly.
You'll likely find a use for the CAN version relatively soon, even if not in your own car, as someone in your circle of acquaintances will always need help.

If you also want to work on other vehicles, then the professional version definitely makes sense.
Did I understand this correctly? I bought the basic equipment, which includes a so-called shareware version of the VCDS software. The only disadvantage compared to the semi-professional version is that I can only use this software for Audi and VW vehicles?

The main issue is that the basic equipment does not support the new CAN interfaces, starting around 2001.

Please refer to the VCDS vehicle list to see which cars require a CAN adapter or other adapters.
