SDI Future: No Turbo Needed?

Hi everyone,

No, I don't want to be unfaithful to my good TDI, it's just a question out of curiosity:

The "older" SDI engines are very similar to their corresponding VE-TDI counterparts in terms of hardware, especially the electronic control unit (ECU), with the main difference being the absence of a turbocharger and various other components like reinforcements and software adjustments.

Now that Volkswagen is phasing out its VE-TDI engines, what will happen to the SDI models?

Can these engines be converted to direct injection (is that even possible without a turbocharger?), or should they remain as naturally aspirated, or is it simply better to replace them with a comparable 1.4 PD TDI engine in terms of power output?

Does anyone know?

Okay, I once read in the AmuS magazine that there would be a direct-injection (PD) engine without a turbocharger, producing approximately 75 horsepower. The SDi version with variable valve timing (VEP) will be discontinued and replaced by the non-turbocharged PD engine.
The first application will be in the Volkswagen Golf 5.

I just checked again. The new SDI engines (only for the Golf) are supposed to be based on the 2-liter TDI engine, which is meant to offer some advantages. I somehow imagine that they will be priced very close to the 100 hp TDI models, but only deliver "just" 75 hp. I couldn't find it, but I also seem to remember reading something about a D4 designation, which would actually make sense.
