Hello.

I experienced several problems during my drive yesterday.

The first time I started the car at an intersection, my Golf jerked briefly as if it was about to stall, but then it immediately continued running.

Shortly after, the engine cut out while the car was moving. All the instruments were dead at that moment.
Blinking was also no longer possible.
Once the car stopped, I was able to start it normally again after about a minute and continue driving.

A little later, there was another near-drowning incident.

A search here yielded 'Relay 109'.
Okay, here's the translation:

Now, my questions:

1. My Golf IV ALH 90 hp, manufactured in 1998, has this relay.
2. If so, where can I find it? As far as I could see, there are no relays in the fuse box located on the left side, near the driver's door.

Thank you very much.
JL

Hi.

1) Yes. 2) Forgotten. The non-functioning turn signals indicate a problem with relay 109. Ignition switch?

Best regards, Rainer.

Relay "109" is designated as "J317" in the wiring diagram, has the title "Relay for voltage supply terminal 30," and should be located in relay slot 12 in the Golf IV. You can find it below the steering wheel, in the footwell.

Best regards, Alex.

Hello again.

First of all, thank you for your quick responses.

Hmm... It could also be the ignition switch.
So, the moment the engine turned off, all the instruments went off as well.
Of course, I immediately activated the turn signal, but there was no indication, either visually with a light or audibly with a click.

During the moments when the engine was about to stall, the preheating light briefly illuminated, and the engine immediately continued running.

So, what do you think, do I have a good chance of fixing the problem with the relay?
I understandably have a very bad feeling while driving.

JL

As Rainer already mentioned,

109 is not the problem.

The 109 switch only activates the power supply for the motor, but not the ignition. But your turn signals are hanging there.

i.e.:

Engine stalls and turn signals don't work >> Ignition power is missing.

If the turn signals would still work while the engine cut out, then the 109 would be a strong contender.

In your case, the problem is likely related to the ignition switch. Try starting the engine and wiggling the key... with a bit of luck, it will either turn off or stutter... if that happens, then the problem is likely with the ignition switch. Otherwise, you have to search and test more carefully to diagnose a defect in the ignition switch.

If that doesn't help, I would start by checking the fuse box located above the battery, where all the main power circuits converge, to make sure that power is actually reaching the interior of the car.

"Even though pin E is connected to the ignition switch, it's still a potential source of heat."

Okay, sure.

I also had a lot of trouble with the fuse box... from ABS failures to engine cutouts... until I realized that the fuse nuts were corroded.

Post05-06-2011, 22:27    Subject: Same problem with a '02 Golf IV with ARL engine Quote

Hi,

I would like to revive this thread because I'm experiencing the same problem.

Occasionally, the engine cuts out while driving, the tachometer drops to 0, and one second after the engine shuts off, the message "-STOP, oil pressure, engine off!" appears.

After turning the ignition off and on again, it was noticed that the glow plug system is not working, or at least, there is no corresponding indicator light. Warning light in the instrument cluster.

I've found a lot of information about relay 109, but I already have a gray relay installed. I checked it out earlier and pulled it to inspect it, but I couldn't find any errors. I cleaned the contacts and took a short ride. The same problem reappeared after just a few kilometers. The relay was touched at that moment, and the temperature was normal.

After repeatedly turning the ignition on and off, the glow plug warning light eventually comes back on (ranging from a few minutes to half an hour), and then the engine starts up normally again.

I'll order the relay tomorrow and report back after I install it. However, I would still appreciate any alternative suggestions. Thank you.

Best regards,
Maik.
