My little engine hasn't been performing quite as well as usual for some time now. Since the performance loss is within acceptable limits, I haven't started any troubleshooting yet.

Gestern hab ich meinen ebenfalls schon länger defekten Kupplungsschalter endlich repariert/getauscht. Völlig unerwartet ging mein Dieselchen auf einmal wie zu seinen besten Zeiten. Wwhat?

The faulty switch was constantly sending a "clutch engaged" signal to the control unit. Otherwise, it ran normally, just without the comfort damping during load changes.

I tried restoring the original state as a test and unplugged the connector (switch = normally closed), but I couldn't detect any difference in current flow. The car runs at full power regardless of the switch position.

The error memory is empty. However, could a moderate limp-home mode still occur with persistent, implausible switch positions? Can anyone explain the effect?

What else does the control unit do when the clutch is depressed?

If available, disable the GRA (Speed Limit System).
Otherwise, the engine would rev up to its maximum speed.

The only explanation I can think of for this behavior is that the switch was faulty and caused the control unit to malfunction.
Otherwise, I wouldn't know what else it could be.
A monitoring process similar to that used for the brake pedal sensor is not in place.

I've been driving with the spark plugs disconnected for months because I prefer the more responsive feel. So far, I haven't observed any negative effects.

He doesn't do that exactly. The control unit recognizes the differences in speeds and reduces the throttle even when the switch is deactivated. However, it's not quite as comfortable under load as it would be with a functioning switch. It takes several rotations for the STG (control unit) to recognize the state.

Why don't you try driving a car with a traditional internal combustion engine again? Maybe your car will run better too...

I already did.
Every time the car goes to the workshop, it's reconnected [to something].
I don't notice any differences whatsoever, aside from the changed response behavior.
Currently, I'm also driving it again because the vehicle inspection (TÜV) and emissions test (AU) are due soon.

I would like to revisit this topic.
I recently had a discussion with a friend about what the purpose of a clutch switch is. We didn't come to any conclusions.
Does anyone know why a switch like that was installed in a 1998 Ibiza with an AFN engine, besides for the cruise control? Or is it really just about price and quantity?

To allow for smoother starts. When the clutch is engaged, the comfort damping system activates, providing a softer engagement. When the clutch is disengaged, the engine responds more directly.

You can try this yourself. While driving, experiment with using the accelerator pedal sometimes without pressing the clutch and other times while keeping your foot on the clutch. You'll notice a smooth transition in one case and a noticeable "load shift" in the other. You can even feel a difference when the car is stationary.

And what about driving dynamics systems in newer vehicles?

You mean ESP and similar systems? That has nothing to do with it. You just have a smoother transition, and the engine doesn't rev up as much when you're not being consistent with the accelerator pedal. Otherwise, it runs pretty normally both with and without the switch activated.

I think that the newer models here react in a similar way.
