Hello!

So far, I haven't personally replaced any control units.
Exception: My father once caused a short circuit while installing a car radio, which damaged some electronic control unit in a Škoda.

Otherwise, I once had an A3 with a short circuit in the fan motor that drained the battery overnight.
After that, the electronics started acting up, but everything could be reprogrammed and fixed.

Golf 4, well, the usual starting speed issue, especially when warm, is a known problem.
In winter conditions at -15°C, it starts easily, but when it's cold, it struggles to start; a new battery helped resolve that issue.

And especially spectacular:
Years ago, with my Corrado:
Without any warning, I got into the car one afternoon, it was summer, and tried to start the engine.
There was a loud bang, and then nothing happened; everything went silent.
The battery exploded, creating a huge hole in it, and the entire engine compartment is now covered in acid.

Yes, unfortunately. The ABS/ESP system is showing intermittent errors or fault entries related to low voltage in the vehicle's electrical system when the car is very cold and many consumers are active.
The battery is from 10/2007.
