Hi.

Can someone explain to me why the Airbox is considered superior to other systems, or why it should be? Of course, on the plus side, it's a closed system that draws in fresh air, unlike those blasted K&N filters, which draw air from the engine bay.
However, the original air filter housing is also a closed system.
So, what exactly constitutes a performance increase? I've found a cross-section of the box here:

I only see the filter element and the cone in the airflow. So, what's the trick? What does the cone do? Doesn't it obstruct the airflow?

The part looks quite simple from a technical perspective. Couldn't you reproduce it yourself, perhaps using a different material instead of carbon fiber?

I understand that with these products, the "inventor" makes a lot of money, and the buyers feel great.

Technisch ... NIX.

I'm not sure about my coffee either; I don't know what was written on the packaging of the filter bag it went through.

A cool carbon frame with aggressive-looking tubes is great when it comes to showing off.

You won't really notice anything on the street... at least not much that's positive.

Yes, didn't Auto Motor und Sport or a similar publication test that part and provide evidence of a significant performance increase? Something like 3-7 horsepower? Or am I completely mistaken?

Probably not with a TDI.

For naturally aspirated gasoline engines with factory-restricted air intakes around the filter, this seems more likely.
However, in the mid rpm range, the power delivery can sometimes decrease, resulting in a loss of torque.

Have you read the technical article about "sports" air filters?

The trick lies in a very low separation efficiency, especially for fine particles.
The air permeability is significantly higher in these filters, which comes at the expense of reduced filtration performance. Textile filters of this type can still be prone to tearing, meaning that when heavily loaded, dirt can be drawn through the pore structure. Furthermore, they are more susceptible to water penetration and the resulting dirt transport.

The common practice of installing modifications directly in front of the mass airflow sensor can damage it due to oil and particle buildup. Measurement errors are also frequent because the air needs to be calmed before reaching the mass airflow sensor. In naturally aspirated engines, modifications to the intake manifold often disrupt the airflow, which frequently results in reduced performance.

I temporarily installed the BMC CDA air intake filter in my Civic Type R to test it out.
It didn't produce anything except for a loud intake noise.
Anyway, I didn't notice anything.

For the sake of defending the vacuum-assisted throttle control, I would like to mention that a DIY solution (approximately €15 in material costs), as seen in the post in the 'for sale' section, has already increased speed by 2 km/h according to the speedometer. In words, 'two' icon_exclaim.gif, despite the presence of a boost pressure regulator.

And the build-up of boost pressure (1000-2000 tons) happens much more abruptly.


There's nothing to say in defense of these things, except perhaps...
It is permissible and acceptable to question the educational level, the standard of knowledge, and the intellectual capabilities of the target audience.
If a country still has enough money that such an expensive product can even find its place on the market (the same applies to excessively priced standard chip tuning software in the €1,000 range), then things can't be as bad as everyone always claims! Then, the price of a liter of gasoline can certainly be €5...

I just happened to be looking at a size comparison between an OEM filter and a product similar to an airbox.

When you imagine the unfolded state of both the OEM filter and the "sport" filter, you can see that the sport filter has a relatively small total filter surface area.
If a motor that requires the entire OEM filter area at its maximum power output were forced to breathe through a filter area as small as that of a moped-like design, using OEM filter paper, I can easily imagine that it would experience breathing difficulties at full throttle and lose a significant amount of horsepower.
To prevent this, the flow resistance per cm² of the sports filter material must be significantly lower than that of the OEM filter paper. And, as far as I know, this can only be achieved with filter pores that, compared to the OEM material, act like wide-open barn doors for any dirt being drawn in.
Of course, the sport filter element is oiled so that dirt will stick to it. However, this can only work for the particles that happen to brush against the oily edge of a barn door. It would be interesting to know what percentage of dirt actually passes through the barn doors and then "specially treats" the surfaces of various internal engine components.

By the way, publicly available information about the actual filtering effectiveness of "sport" filters seems to be quite scarce. I've only found one link so far:

...which, of course, would also be interesting to know: how much of the "test dirt" the OEM filters let through.

Does anyone know of any other similar tests available online?
