Hello,

Last night, I experienced a clutch judder for the first time.
When accelerating fully in 4th and 5th gear from low RPM, the engine speed immediately increases once it reaches 2000 RPM and remains constant at 2400 RPM until the maximum speed achievable by the "drive train side" is reached. At that point, the clutch no longer slips.

Okay, let's start with the engine: it's been tuned with a chip to approximately 130 horsepower / 300 Nm of torque, but the tuning is set up so that the torque increase doesn't kick in until relatively high RPMs (2000 RPM). Otherwise, everything is stock except for the AGR (Abgasrückführung) system. The car has normal performance, meaning it reaches its top speed, there's no excessive smoke, and it takes about 5.2 seconds for the "Ulf" acceleration test.

I've heard about slipping clutches before, but always only from American users on the TDIClub forum. Apparently, no one here has experienced this problem yet, and there are definitely people here who are getting significantly more Nm (Newton-meters) out of the 110PS (horsepower) engine.

The strange thing about my slipping clutch is that the problem appeared suddenly. It didn't happen during the day at around icon_smile_thumb_up.gif7°C, but it did happen at night at around 10°C. It also didn't show any signs of developing in the days leading up to it.

Okay, here are my questions:
Does anyone else experience a slipping clutch? If so, what are your experiences regarding when and how it occurs?
Is there any way to adjust the clutch in a 6K Ibiza with an ASV gearbox?
Which clutch would be more suitable for a TDI engine, and what is the cost? What needs to be disassembled to install the clutch?

Thank you and best regards,
Georg.

hello,

I have a Golf IV ASV with a chip tuning kit, and I've noticed the same symptoms. I'll probably have to replace the clutch sooner or later.

Regards,
Benjamin.

Hello,

At 10°C, the intake air is denser than at 17°C. Apparently, this small difference/increase in torque is just enough to cause your clutch to slip. The clutch is either worn out, has reached its normal limit, or is simply slipping. You have the choice between a stronger clutch (which costs money), being more careful with the accelerator pedal (which can be annoying), or a slight electronic torque reduction.

Best regards, Uli.

Hi,

In my manual transmission car, the clutch would slip in sub-zero temperatures, especially when it was still cold.
It's not really a problem, as I only experience this issue with a cold engine in rare cases. Once the engine and clutch are warm, the full torque is maintained.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hello,

Thank you for the answers.
Yesterday night, the clutch was already slipping in 3rd gear at 1500 rpm. It was still slipping after 20 km of driving. Today, with a temperature of almost 20°C, there was no more slipping. Maybe I should build a hairdryer for the clutch 'icon_biggrin.gif'.

Well, it's a bit annoying that the clutch has only seen 60,000 km, especially since I consider myself a driver who is gentle on the clutch.

What kind of upgrades are available instead of the standard clutch?

Best regards, Georg.

hehehe...

But a slipping clutch generates heat itself...

Mhh, do you think that one should start icon_wink.gif by using a lot of gas (4,000 RPM or more (even into the red zone)) and a lot of slipping clutch (definitely maintaining the RPM level)? }

The housewife ashtrays last surprisingly long without any complaints with icon_eek.gif.

but on the subject: one thing is clear, the standard clutch is NOT suitable for tuning. it can't handle that much torque. and when it's cold, the pads harden and it starts to slip. it's like with a braking system - a little temperature change and it works perfectly icon_wink.gif.

Otherwise, you might want to inquire with LUK and SACHS. They also have a motorsports program.

@Gremlin

I don't know how people can start driving with so much gas. My mother does it too. I, on the other hand, try to start with as little gas as possible (it's kind of embarrassing to let the engine rev really loudly and then release the clutch).

Best regards, WarLord.

Hi,

Here's the translation:

"In my opinion, there's definitely something to be said against the theory that cold clutch linings are more prone to slipping than warm ones."

IsIt doesn't, however.
I imagine that the mechanism responsible for the clamping pressure works well sometimes, but not always.
Or there might be condensation inside, which means the coupling function is more dependent on the cooling rate of the surroundings. For example, if it gets extremely cold very quickly, there will be more condensation inside.
Well, all this speculation doesn't help. I removed the box, and the clutch has been working since then.

Best regards, Georg.
