Hello there,
Due to a lack of acceleration (delayed response) in my Golf 4 with an ALH engine, manufactured in 1998, I started looking for information here. I have now removed the AGR valve and found a lot of deposits. I also removed the intake manifold, and there were also about 4-5mm thick deposits there (although the car has only 78,000 km). Cleaning the AGR valve and the intake manifold was relatively easy, but does anyone have a tip on how to clean the inlets on the cylinder head without removing it?

I don't think there's much you can do about it; the risk of something falling into the engine is too high... Either remove it or leave it as it is.
If someone has a better idea than the current one, then let's hear it .

Do these commercially available additives actually help in the long run to gradually reduce the amount of sludge buildup? Has anyone had any experience with them? Since I can't remove the cylinder head myself, and the workshop is too expensive, this might be an alternative.

What kind of additives?
How are they supposed to get to the intake channels, since a diesel engine only allows air to pass through?

Okay, everything is reassembled now. Fortunately, the cylinder head inlets weren't sealed too tightly. I carefully cleaned the edges and kept a vacuum cleaner nearby. It was a real mess overall; any chimney sweep would have been thrilled. Now, let's hope that the acceleration problem (delayed throttle response) is gone.
Here are the spare part numbers you might need:

028129717D (Intake manifold gasket)
N90521601 (Rubber ring for AGR system)
069131547D (casting for EGR valve)
2x 90200201 (nuts)
ALH engine, 1998 model, all information provided without guarantee.

And ???
Did you document everything nicely with the digital camera?
Nicely formatted in HTML and put online so that everyone can replicate it?
No??
SORRY! Then, next time .

Sure, I took pictures, but I haven't processed them yet.
But I think you're trying to pull my leg, aren't you?
But a small guide like that would be helpful.

NO, I'm not really trying to trick you, but it was intended to be a little ironic .
(I just assumed you hadn't taken any pictures.)
But even that's only because I always recognize how helpful such instructions can be, but when I'm crafting, I always forget to document the process.
If you have photos, that's definitely "top-notch"!!
I've only managed to create one "guide" so far:
http://people.freenet.de/golf-schrauber/Spannrolle/Spannrolle_1Z.html
and the process of cutting G4 wheel caps, photographed at a 4/100 ratio.

Good engine oil can already make a difference.
The engine's blow-by gases are returned via the blow-by gas recirculation system.
enriched with oil droplets or oil mist and injected into the intake manifold.
While the oil additives have only a slight cleaning effect, they at least prevent an increase in contamination. The quality of a good motor oil can also be recognized by the cleanliness on the air side of the turbocharger; the fewer deposits, the better.
Engine oil.

Last week, I had a Golf 6 1.6 gasoline engine, where the intake channels were heavily carbonized, resulting in misfires on cylinder 2 and an unstable idle. Subsequently, I cleaned the intake channels using a walnut blasting system (they looked like new afterward), but this had minimal effect because the valve seats in the combustion chamber are difficult to clean from the outside, so I had to remove the cylinder head.
