Hello,

What kind of smell is that, in your opinion? Or, how would you describe the smell? (Not Russian vegetable oil, because I don't even know what that smells like!)
To be honest, I can't say I find any positive smell coming from a diesel engine, even a new one.

Best regards,
Albrecht.

'It's an old swirl chamber – or a pre-combustion chamber diesel. A new TDI, on the other hand, smells somehow fresh.'

Best regards, WarLord.

I find the description quite accurate.
A new TDI or CDI engine has a slightly pungent, sulfurous smell. An older TDI or pre-chamber diesel engine, on the other hand, smells like an old oil heating system.
It's hard to describe, but the difference is very clear.

Alex.

I hope that 'old TDI' doesn't refer to the 1Z model. With new injectors, it actually smells fresh (like a new TDI). When it was new (or had 65,000 km), the exhaust smelled fresh.

Best regards, WarLord.

@WarLord:

No!!! Please excuse the imprecise wording. By "old" TDI, I naturally mean any TDI engine (1Z, AGR, AFN, ALH, AHU, ASV, etc.) with high mileage, so that the injectors are noticeably worn.

Alex.

Here's a small additional note on the topic of nozzles.
Today, I reconfigured my ESP system and set the dynamic injection start timing in the base position quite close to the upper tolerance limit.
Since several attempts were needed to get it right (it's quite a delicate matter), I had more than enough opportunity to intensely notice the extremely unpleasant and pervasive smell of diesel.

What I also noticed is that the values for the idle speed control are quite erratic. Just before the adjustment, all cylinders were at a maximum of approximately ±0.2 mg/H. After the adjustment, the values deteriorated somewhat, with the maximum being around 0.4 mg/H.
After I really pushed the engine (approximately 30 km of driving, a lot of full throttle, revving the gears past 4000 RPM), two cylinders suddenly showed readings of 0.8/0.9 mg/H.
This phenomenon seems to also manifest audibly. I can usually hear the knocking sound most clearly when the engine has been under load beforehand. A subsequent idling phase then leads to noticeable knocking noises, which, in my opinion, are caused by worn injectors.

What do you think about it?

Regards,
Alex.

Okay, so, I replaced the injectors on my 1Z a week ago with new injectors, and the smell has only changed slightly. And no, no dirt got in there. I've never worked so cleanly before. I'm thinking that maybe it's not just the old injectors that can cause a change in smell. The catalytic converter will probably also degrade over time. icon_confused.gif
Generally speaking, it can be observed that it now runs a bit smoother, vibrates less, and the harsh knocking sound on one cylinder (when cold) seems to have disappeared.
By the way, I also had trouble getting replacement nozzles. Bosch doesn't have any for the 1Z engine either. Joergs had looked up the part numbers for me, but they are discontinued. The Bosch employee also called a competitor, but they didn't have any either. As a last resort, he recommended that I try VW, and I actually managed to get some there (for 480 euros).
By the way, I highly recommend replacing the copper rings that go under the nozzles. Otherwise, it won't seal properly again icon_redface.gif.
