VCDS-Instruction: Calibration of Steering Angle Sensor (G85) for Vehicles on the MQB Platform
WARNING: Since safety-relevant parameters can be changed in this procedure, it should only be carried out by persons with the appropriate expertise or experience.
If the error code
[code]0295 - Steering Angle Sensor
B1168 54 [10001001] - No default setting
Warning light ON - confirmed - checked since last shutdown
"If the ESP/ABS system has been reset, a zero-calibration of the sensor is necessary."
Where can I find out if I have a MQB vehicle?

Procedure, Step 1: Sensor Calibration, Steering Angle Sensor
- Start the engine and let it run.
- Ensure the front wheels are precisely aligned in a straight direction.
- In VCDS control unit
[44-Steering Assist] select
-
[16-Access Right] with the code displayed in the VCDS tooltip
- Change to
[Default setting - 04]
-
[Display metrics] Select and mark the following metrics:
IDE02216-MAS03161 (Steering Angle Sensor: Initial Setting - Start)
IDE02216-IDE05795 (Steering Angle Sensor: Initial Setup - Stop Initial Setup)
- Default setting
[MAS00815] Select steering angle sensor and start with
[Start!] → Display must show
Running
- Steering wheel
very slow (5-10°/s) until the
rightmost end position is reached
- Turn the steering wheel
very slowly until it reaches the
leftmost end position
- Exactly return the steering wheel to the
straight ahead position.
- Check the measurements:
- IDE02216-MAS03161 should display
Allowed
- IDE02216-IDE05795 should display
Completed
- Upon successful completion,
Successfully completed will appear. Then press
[Stop]
Possible Error Situations:
- The
function is unknown or cannot be executed successfully: Security access failed or incorrect code
- Does the
system appear to be ready: End-of-life detection not completed correctly
- No status changes allowed
: In Progress
/ Completed: Steering movements too fast or not to the end stops.
Step 2: System Verification
- Turn the steering wheel to the rightmost end position.
- Turn the steering wheel to the left end stop.
- Return to straight ahead position exactly
- Check the yellow EPS warning light in the instrument cluster:
MUST extinguish within 3 seconds!
- Turn off the engine
- Read and clear error codes from all relevant modules (especially
03 - Brakes and
44 - Power Steering)
Critical Success Factors:
- Battery voltage >12.5V throughout the entire procedure
- Precise alignment of the wheels at the beginning
- Max. Maintain steering wheel speed of 10°/s
- No interruption of the diagnostic connection
After successful calibration, the steering wheel center position should be achieved without warning lights and without any error messages.
