Hello,
Perhaps you could give me some tips.
"On my A6 (2.5l TDI, automatic, C4, manufactured in 1995), I have a problem where the ignition key doesn't automatically return to the normal position after starting the engine. This means that without manually turning the key back, the starter would constantly run."
What could be broken there? Is it a spring in the steering wheel lock, or do I just need to replace the switch?
Regards,
Ronny.

Hello ronny252!
It looks like the return spring in the ignition switch is broken.
Unfortunately, I haven't disassembled an ignition switch before, so I can't assess whether the spring can be replaced and the old ignition switch can be reused.
However, if you follow that product strategy, I believe you'll likely have to replace the entire module, meaning the complete zipper mechanism.
But, as I said, I don't know for sure. Perhaps someone here on the forum can provide you with more expert information about the construction and "repairability" of the ignition switch.

Hello Alex,
Thank you for the response. I also suspected a return spring, but where is it located?
In the electrical ignition/starter switch, which is likely just plugged in and probably relatively easy to replace, or perhaps in the mechanics of the steering lock?
Does anyone have any more tips on this?
Thank you and best regards.
Ronny.

I only know about it from Mercedes, where it's located in the dashboard. However, I suspect that VW also installs it in the same location.
Mentally, I would also categorize it there, since it's an electrical condition that the starter motor shouldn't run indefinitely. But, as we know, that doesn't necessarily mean anything.
If you're already mentioning that the switch is so easy to disassemble, I'd like to take it off and have a look at it, or even try replacing it (if the dealer is willing to do that). Alternatively, you could simply ask the dealer for a new one (if they have it in stock) and then try turning it. That way, you'll quickly see if the spring they suspect is actually present inside.
Regards,
Private.

Hello everyone,
It is very likely due to the ignition switch, which is an electrical component. However, a few disassembly steps are necessary to replace it.

Hello,
The Golf II, Golf III, Passat 35i, and Polo 86C models have the reset mechanism located in the electrical part of the ignition switch.
I'd say there's a 95% chance that your Audi is the same, given the modular construction principle.
Let us know if you break it down.
Best regards, Andy.
