Hello everyone!

Today, while jump-starting my G3 from an MB /8 200D (wow, a great car), I noticed a strange clicking sound coming from a relay located between the air filter and the diesel filter.
I have already tried using the search function.

/viewtopic.php?t=1189&highlight=tickern

^^I still don't quite understand why this is happening in the engine's timing. I'm not really clear on the functionality or purpose.
'Furthermore, I believe that it hasn't always been like this; I was really surprised.'

I would be very grateful for any clarification or information that could expand my technical understanding.

Best regards,

Capernaum.

Hi.

This is a pressure-reducing valve.

It's also making a very loud ticking sound for me. It costs EUR 30 and its model number is 028 906 283 F.

I had already considered exchanging it, because the rattling is louder than the cold engine! But I've received conflicting statements about whether a new one would also rattle or be quieter. Furthermore, my VW dealer doesn't want to remove it for testing (simply connecting it electrically would be enough to test the rattling, but he won't do that new_cry.gif.

"Why this thing is activated with the engine idling is probably known only to the VW developers who were probably a bit too tipsy on mulled wine back then..."

m;

Ah, you also want to know about the function:

Okay, the 1Z and the AHU engines (which have almost the same engine) have wastegate turbos. This means that if the boost pressure gets too high, a portion of the exhaust gases is "wasted," meaning it's not used to generate pressure. Without any intervention, the turbos would regulate themselves to 0.6 bar. However, to achieve higher boost levels and also to allow for adjustments, the boost pressure control valve is used to manipulate the measured pressure by mixing it with outside air. This results in a regulated boost pressure of 0.9 bar.

Here's a technical article about "Steuerpneumatiken VP37"; using the search function should help you find it.

@dieselmartin: Thanks for the quick reply!
icon_lol.gif

I stopped by Bosch briefly yesterday afternoon because I happened to be passing by.
I actually considered this shop to be quite competent when it comes to diesel engines (a free tip: they replaced relay 109 and re-soldered the relay for free -- as a student, after the 109 replacement, I would have been broke and probably would have had to replace 2 new mass airflow sensors and a new turbocharger icon_biggrin.gif).
Well, but this picture is also clouded: I once asked at the counter if anyone could listen to the ticking sound, and a friendly person came out. After 2 seconds, he said everything was okay, it was normal, and it was a relay for the fuel injection pump... icon_eek.gif
I guess I was being heavily ridiculed.

As far as.

Best regards,

Hi,

"just to clarify: "

Are you referring to that "rattling" sound that happens immediately after turning on the ignition and then stops after about 2-5 seconds? It definitely comes from the ESP system, and according to the forum (->search function), it's supposed to be normal.

Perhaps the Bosch representative also heard that, and that's why they gave you that answer, which would be correct in that case.

Best regards,

Jan.

No, no!
He even said that the noise was coming from the relay between the air filter and the diesel filter, and he pointed it out... + the engine had already been running for 10 seconds.

Best regards.

by the way: thank you again so much for the article!

Yes, yes, that ticking sound of the solenoid valve...

'There are really all sorts of different experiences. For example, mine only ticks when the engine is running. However, I've also read here several times that the ticking occurs even when just turning the ignition on. Furthermore, mine sometimes ticks and sometimes doesn't (both at idle). I bought a new one back then because the ticking worried me. The new one sounded identical...'
Conclusion: You can't tell from the sound whether the device is still in working order...

So, to clarify (as I mentioned before), mine starts ticking as soon as I turn on the "ignition."

Engine Control Unit (ECU) number:
028 906 021 AF

The colder it gets, the louder it is. Currently (at below-freezing temperatures), it's louder than the cold TDI idling!

I've already asked 3 VW dealerships if the ticking sound is bad, and I received 5 different answers.

From "is normal" to "then it will start to break" to "then it will be broken" icon_evil.gif.

"The STG also had my 1Z."

Regarding the ticking:
That's normal!
I replaced the valve once, and after that, it wasn't as loud (sometimes you couldn't hear it at all), but it didn't go away completely.

I can only confirm the observations that were made. Sometimes it clicks, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it's louder, sometimes it's quieter. But overall, everything seemed to be within the normal range!

Hehe icon_lol.gif

'I'm relieved, I couldn't quite pinpoint the source of the clicking sound, as I have a stuffy nose... I initially suspected it was the tensioner pulleys or the timing belt (which is due for replacement in 5,000 km).'
Apparently, all of these are genuine character relays. icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif
Another noise has been identified and resolved (and the Bosch technician can continue to replace the carburetor illumination bulbs icon_wink.gif).

Best regards,

Capernaum.

I completely agree. After a very cold night, the ticking sound became much more noticeable again.

Just turn up the radio and ignore icon_biggrin.gif. As long as it's ticking, it's at least doing its job. If there were absolute silence, I would be more concerned.

Regards,
Alex.
