Hi,
'I'm experiencing a temperature problem with my Passat. The temperature gauge showed 110°C, and while I was stopped at a traffic light, the engine started venting water, which was noticeable by the steam rising from under the hood. I pulled the car over and turned it off for a while. After about 1/4 of an hour, I started driving again. The heating stopped working; it was only blowing cold air. I can't imagine it's the heat exchanger, as it was recently replaced. However, I have a slight, constant water leak, visible on the black fitting above the glow plugs. It's about 1 liter every 2 weeks. Also, the large hose that comes from the radiator is always under high pressure (as I can feel when I touch it) and is always empty. When you squeeze it, you can feel that there's no water inside. The engine was replaced about 100,000 km ago with a rebuilt engine, and the water pump was also replaced at the same time.'
Passat, 1989, GT TD, LLK (low-pressure turbo), 80 hp.
Thank you very much.

matthias

Sounds like a head gasket to me.

The pressure from the combustion process is entering the water wells and creating significant pressure there.

That's how it was with my Golf 2 diesel back then.

I don't know what the f*ck it was.

Please check your thermostat to make sure it's not stuck and that it opened properly. This could be the reason for the high temperature. Also, please check if it's still open, as this could mean the main cooling circuit is still open, preventing the engine from reaching its operating temperature, which would lead to high fuel consumption. Additionally, please check if your radiator fan is working and if the thermostat switch that controls the fan is functioning correctly.
