Hello.
I'm new here and I've read through the posts about motor oil, but I haven't been able to find a clear answer to my problem.
Yesterday, I bought a VW Passat Variant, manufactured in December 1999, with a TDI PD engine and a 85 kW (AJM) motor code.
My question is, what kind of oil can I use?
According to the operating instructions, multi-grade engine oils meeting the VW500 00 specification can only be used in conjunction with VW 505 00 oil, and must include an additive (not older than 11/92).
Multi-grade oils meeting VW 501 01 specification are only compatible with VW 505 00 (additive must be no older than 11/92).
What are the viscosities of the oils, and which one is suitable for my car?
Would you also change the oil every 10,000 km, even though the currently prescribed interval is 15,000 km?
Can I use a cheaper oil?
Thank you.
Okay, and how about the timing belt replacement intervals? Has anything changed there, or does it still remain at 60,000 km?

Hmmm...

We've discussed before that the passenger car oils should have the Longlife 505 01 specification. Whether it's a 10w40 or 5w40, or something else, is a matter of personal preference and, above all, what's available.

The manufacturer and, consequently, the price should not matter, as long as it meets the relevant standard.

They remain at 60,000 km, unless you've already had the cylinder head replaced (different belt routing) and a few other parts as well. However, I'm not entirely sure about the year of manufacture of your car. What does the service booklet say? We have an ATJ engine (related to the AJM, but the ATJ is designed for a 6-speed gearbox and has 310 Nm of torque), and it has 90,000 km. The manufacturing period is almost the same, and I think ours is even a bit older.

Regarding the oil: You likely don't have a LongLife service interval (given the car's year of manufacture). Therefore, you'll need oil that meets the 505 01 specification.

Best regards, WarLord.

Hello,

The statement is very simple.

You must only use oil that meets the 505.01 specification, due to the increased surface pressures on the camshaft for the VVT (Variable Valve Timing) system.
505.01 is only available as a 5W-40 semi-synthetic oil. The brand doesn't matter, only the specification is important.

The owner's manual is very confusing for the early PD models. The key takeaway is that for PD models without the 'LongLife' specification, only oil meeting the 505.01 standard can be used. However, if oil of this standard is not available, 505.00 oil can be used temporarily, but only for topping up, not for a complete oil change.

Is it really only available as a 5W40 semi-synthetic oil? I find that hard to believe.

Best regards, WarLord.

Thank you for the clear statements.
I ordered 20 liters of engine oil online from Reifendirekt.at.
Price: €90 (It's a bit cheaper in Germany, around €60). That's just how it is.
But thank you again to everyone who responded to me.

@thomas k

http://www.sicherbestellen.de/reifendirekt/Motoroel.html

and then the oil:

High Performer 5W-40 PDI.
synthetic PDI (pump-nozzle)

I'm reading something about fully synthetic oil or something like that?

Hello,

That is definitely wrong, what they are writing there.

PD oil 505.01 is always and everywhere a partially synthetic oil. When someone writes 'fully synthetic,' they usually mean hydrocracked oil, which is mineral oil that has been refined, and that is, by definition, a partially synthetic oil, not a fully synthetic one.

The same discussions happen with 'regular' 5W-40 oil.
