Hi...
ich hab nen Golf TDI 90PS Bj 96. MKB 1Z.
With just under 200,000 km on the clock, the engine gave up the ghost. I ordered a complete engine from Meyer Motors and had it installed by a certified automotive mechanic.
Right after starting the engine, I noticed a slight knocking sound. The mechanic said that it might be normal, as a new engine can have a more aggressive combustion process than an old one. The people at Meyer Motors also agreed with that assessment.
Now, 6 months or 30,000 km later, I have a relatively large amount of oil on my rear window when I'm driving. And since my old engine also did this, shortly before it broke down, I decided to call the people at the engine reconditioning shop again.
They thought that the engine might not have been properly bled during installation, which could have caused it to fail immediately. And now, after 30,000 km, the problem is getting worse.
Do you think this theory is possible? I somehow had the feeling that the ticking sound was more likely coming from a valve lifter that wasn't working properly.
However, the issue with the oil on the rear window probably points more towards the 'eater' theory.
What interests me is that Meyer mentioned that the TDI 1Z engines are known for being prone to issues during installation.
Is there anything you know about that?
Thank you in advance.
Best regards,
Oliver.

Hey , what all was renewed?
Were the fuel injectors and fuel injection pump also replaced?
What should I do if the engine is knocking?
Are you an expert?
And what does that mean Quote: | ? The TDI 1Z engines are known for being prone to problems during installation.

No, unfortunately, I'm not an expert in that field.
The statements came from the gentleman at Meyer Motors.
The assumption about the eating was based on the oil found on the rear window.
The engine came with everything: fuel pump, injectors, oil pump, and all the components that are part of a complete engine. Also, since the engine was already out, I bought a new turbocharger. So, everything was new except for the air conditioning compressor and other miscellaneous parts.
I need to have an endoscope used to inspect the combustion chambers. I'll probably have to take it to a VW workshop for that.
Okay. And regarding the question about what 'leicht fressen' means, the person from Meyer Motoren said that the 1Z engines are sensitive. If you install them, fill them with coolant, and don't carefully bleed the system, they can immediately overheat in certain areas, and then a cylinder can seize.

How much oil does the engine need?

So, he doesn't have any increased oil consumption.
Currently, I'm using about 7 liters of diesel. However, because I often drive at full throttle and with high RPMs, my consumption has always been between 6 and 7 liters.

At most, it uses 1/4 liter every 10,000 km.

According to meyer Motoren, the 1Z engines are sensitive and react poorly if they are installed, coolant is added, and they are not carefully bled. They then immediately become too hot in certain areas, and then a cylinder can experience a misfire. }
Okay, so mechanically speaking, the 1Z is one of the most robust TDI engines. I can't imagine it being prone to any major issues. Most 1Z engines probably failed due to the crankshaft bolt problem.
Best regards, WarLord.

Okay, I'm revising my previous statement about there being no increased oil consumption.
According to my check-up today, the engine consumed approximately 0.75 liters of oil for every 1000 km.
He didn't need it before, and I'm really afraid that something serious is about to happen.

Do you offer any kind of warranty or guarantee?
That sounds expensive.

Well, I bought the engine in November and had a certified automotive mechanic install it. It wasn't his main job, but he was still a certified master mechanic.
And I also changed the oil regularly.
1-year warranty according to EU law.
Currently studying for the first part of my law degree. Maybe I can help you stand up for yourself.

Then I would immediately contact the installer(s) and give them a piece of my mind before it's too late.
The oil leak could have many different causes... I hope you get a new engine block!

Oh man... having to do all that renovation work again... And I already wondered back then if it was even worth it.
I hope they actually do something about the engine and that I don't have to start dealing with my warranty. Although, it didn't sound like that when I spoke to them on the phone.
To be honest, my initial impression was positive.
I had arranged with them to have the inside of the vehicle's combustion chambers inspected with an endoscope, so we could see if there was any damage.
The engine had that ticking noise from the very first second.

Regardless of how much it eats, that's not the issue. The engine has something wrong with it...
If the motor supplier is reasonably reputable, then there shouldn't be any major disputes.
The effort required for the conversion is certainly not insignificant. However, I believe the effort is worthwhile. Despite its flaws, the 1Z engine was generally not a bad engine.
Well, hopefully, if you're lucky, the renovation won't be your problem either!
