@Olli
Is there not a recall campaign currently underway for the 3B and A4 models regarding the front axle? After all, the front axles are identical in both vehicles.
Yep, that's exactly where one is happening right now.
Wolfsburg (dpa) - VW is recalling a total of 870,000 vehicles worldwide, including models from the Passat line as well as Audi A4, A6, and A8. The vehicles may have damage to the rubber bellows in the front axles. Of these, 410,000 vehicles are affected in Germany. The company announced this in Wolfsburg. Vehicle owners will be offered a free inspection. The damage can primarily lead to premature wear, especially in vehicles with high mileage, and in some cases, it can cause the tie rods to fail.
VW is recalling 870,000 vehicles for a service check.
Wolfsburg/Ingolstadt (AFP) - Due to potential technical issues with the front axle, Volkswagen is offering a free service check to owners of older models of the Passat and Audi A4, A6, and A8. The company announced that approximately 870,000 vehicles worldwide are affected, including around 410,000 in Germany. Meanwhile, DaimlerChrysler is recalling 24,000 Mercedes-Benz models in Japan.
For Passat models manufactured between 1996 and 1999, Audi A4 and A8 models manufactured between 1994 and 1999, and Audi A6 models from 1997 to 1999, there may be damage to the rubber bellows of the front axle. This can lead to premature wear, especially in vehicles with high mileage, and in some cases, it can cause the tie rods to fail.
A spokesperson for the Japanese subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler in Tokyo stated that a government inspection had already identified the defects in cars imported since August 1998 as early as December, but the causes were only determined after several months.
In three cases, defective parts in the air conditioning system caused fires, and in many other instances, defects in hydraulic shock absorbers were the cause of the fire.
The spokesperson further stated that additional models would need to be recalled to workshops due to defective trunk lids, which in one case had led to injuries. Furthermore, in several other countries, 'appropriate measures' are currently being examined, taking into account the respective legal regulations, to rectify the defects.

Hi,
I once wanted to test drive a 35i. VW presented it back then as a 'space miracle,' but unfortunately, the interior feels like an oversized subcompact car. This is due to the high seating position, where the steering wheel is always too far away and the pedals are too close, as well as the excessively short seat surfaces. Our company cars unfortunately didn't have adjustable steering wheels. As for durability, it's questionable. With higher mileage, the suspension becomes spongy despite intact shock absorbers. Without air conditioning, the car is particularly unpleasant, especially as a gasoline model; the windows let in a lot of sunlight, and when it's already unbearable, the heating system adds to the discomfort by radiating heat from the floor panel. In the older models with the 'nostril' design (were they also called 35i?), the entire body eventually becomes brittle, both here and in the Auto Bild test.
Hmm, I couldn't observe any of that. Our 35i TDI with the 1Z engine only had 174,000 km on it, but the suspension was fine (better than in the 3B). There was plenty of space inside. I didn't have any problems with the seats, except that they weren't made of leather. *g* Ours had air conditioning (although it wasn't working at the end), so we didn't have any issues with the heat. We were completely satisfied.
I'm so happy with it that I'm even considering buying one as my first car.
Best regards, WarLord.

Hi,
Okay, in the end, we had to discard about 250,000 of them. And new dampers were definitely needed.
Sure, there are many other cars out there, some of which are much worse, but when compared to the 3B, it doesn't stand a chance, and neither does an older C4. Even a Golf IV drives more maturely, although it can't compete in terms of interior space. Gruß Christian

Okay, so with the Golf IV and its standard suspension, ours could definitely compete well. The standard suspension on the Golf IV is just incredibly soft; it's not normal.
Okay, that's your opinion. I have my own opinion about the car, especially since I've read about some with more than 600,000 kilometers on them.
Best regards, WarLord.

Does anyone have any useful information regarding the Audi A6 C4 Avant?
"I'm going to take a look at one next week. It will have the AAT engine, which is the smaller one with 116 horsepower. I've been advised against it, but I want to see it because the car has an ATM transmission with only 75,000 km on it. An AEL would be preferable, but those all have extremely high mileage at reasonable prices."
And according to the manufacturer's specifications, an AAT is still faster than my old 1Z . VW Golf III TDI Avenue, MKB 1Z, EZ96

Hi,
The first question would be: why does it have an ATM? Is it due to poor maintenance, extremely high mileage, or simply bad luck?
Besides the high fixed costs, I can't think of any other counterarguments. I've been driving mine since '97. Gruß Christian

Hello everyone,
I hope the condition of the car's interior can be judged by looking at the rest of it; we'll see.
What do you mean by high fixed costs? Tax is clear; for Euro2, it's about 400 euros per year.

If the golf course is also that expensive...
Spare part prices are indeed quite high. The Golf and similar models are more reasonably priced in that regard.
It's always been a bit more expensive to have good taste.

Well, that's true. But I'm still buying an Audi with the hope that the car will last for a while.
I once looked up the trim levels for Golf and Audi C4 models: HF, VK, and TK.
Golf3 AFN: 20/23/26
Audi C4 AAT or AEL: 21/24/27
The difference is really negligible. You have to accept the higher prices for spare parts, but I think in return you get a reliable car.
Your AAT isn't exactly new anymore either. Audi 100 models are also being sold for a significantly lower price than the A6 models. If I happen to find a well-maintained Audi 100, then the age difference wouldn't matter to me as much. VW Golf III TDI Avenue, MKB 1Z, EZ96

Hi there,
The diagnostic connector is located in the relay holder inside the water reservoir, which is situated in front of the windshield on the driver's side.
