Hello,

I was also thinking about the bilge pump. The whistling seems to be coming from underneath, more specifically from the driver's side. And it's still whistling, even after replacing the catalytic converter and the exhaust pipe.
The dealer has now initiated an inquiry in Wolfsburg.

"After everything between the engine head and the exhaust pipe has been replaced on my Golf, I'm now supposed to get a completely new engine. The whistling noise cannot be located. The workshop manager was at a Volkswagen service center yesterday, and they decided to replace the engine there."
A new engine with all its components will be installed, but the existing transmission will be retained.
Does anyone have experience with whether a replacement engine or a new engine will be used? The Golf has 30,000 km on it. Is there a mileage limit beyond which a replacement engine is installed?

'Exchange engine' primarily means that you 'trade in' your old engine. If you just buy a new engine, you would still have another engine for the garage... just to look at!

'Rebuilt engines are thoroughly overhauled engines. Some older components, such as the oil pan and engine block, are refurbished and reused. To my knowledge, the cylinder head is always brand new.'
Don't worry, these engines are top-notch. My replacement ALH engine in my Golf 4 was also a great piece of equipment, and it never let me down (unlike the original engine).

Will the PD-Es also be refurbished or rebuilt from the old engine? I would prefer to have new ones... if that is possible.

According to the workshop foreman, only the transmission will be the original part. Since it's a noise problem that can't be localized, all attached components and aggregates will be replaced. The engine will apparently be completely assembled, including the alternator and water pump. Fortunately, I'll also be getting a new timing belt at the same time.
