Oil Drain Plug 1Z

Hi.

Yesterday, I removed the soundproofing shield from my 1Z to add transmission oil additive.

While doing that, I noticed that my engine is afraid of sunburn and therefore diligently oils itself.

Since I almost broke my fingers once on the G2 trying to get the oil pan back on (they designed it with 2-3 screws BEHIND the transmission bell housing!!! ), I'm asking beforehand this time.

What type of screws does the G3 TDI (1Z model, 1996) use for the oil pan? They have Torx-like teeth, but there are 6 of them.

Are these Allen wrenches, or are they some kind of special, over-the-top thing again?

Is there anything I should be aware of when removing the oil pan?

Does anyone have any AFN oil pan dampers left over that they could spare?

I don't know which screws are used there.
However, Allen screws have 6 sides with straight surfaces between the corners.
A Torx screw also has 6 sides, but with angled surfaces in between.
Otherwise, there are only multi-tooth screws left. They look like Torx screws, but have 12 points!
They are, for example, used in drive shafts. The corresponding nuts are also quite expensive and only available from specialist retailers!

Make sure to tighten the oil pan with the specified torque; otherwise, it will likely leak almost immediately.

The part is called an external Torx screw.

In machine manufacturing, the Torx (internal/external) screw head is now an indispensable component.

I read that the 'D2' type should be used for this application. Does anyone happen to know what 'D2' refers to?

No, those are not Torx screws.

I was just thinking that Torx screws have 5 sides.
(Probably based on the new LMM screws...)

Perhaps the screws were just very dirty, so I didn't recognize them as Torx screws (stupid me).

Torx has 6 points, while a LMM screw has (sometimes... not always) 5 points... so it's not a Torx.

Unfortunately, I don't have the tightening torque value memorized.


D2 is a sealant specified by Volkswagen.


EDIT:

Older screws sometimes had 12 sides as well... I remember that. You can loosen them with a regular 12-point socket wrench.

I would estimate that the torque is around 20 Nm.
