Hello,

My Golf III with the 1Z engine has already stopped working twice. Of course, it happened while I was driving.
The first time was about 3 weeks ago, and it happened again this morning. But the symptoms were the same.
The engine simply stalls. However, the glow plug system activates. It actually does glow. I have an ammeter for the glow plugs, so I can see the current draw.
The first time, I was able to start the engine right away. This morning, it took about 5 tries.
By the way, every time the ignition was turned on, the glow plug system was activated, and electricity flowed to the glow plugs. However, once the engine starts, the glow plugs are no longer activated.
I am familiar with the problems related to relay 109 and the old immobilizer system.
When these relays fail, the motor only stops, but it doesn't start to glow, right?
By the way, the error memory was at least empty the last time I checked. Today, I haven't had the chance to start VAGCOM yet.
Does anyone recognize these symptoms?
What needs to happen for the engine to be shut down by the control unit? Why is the glow plug system activated?
Gruss Oliver.

hi,

Unfortunately, I can't answer that for you, but I'm having a similar problem. Maybe someone here knows how to fix it?

My car is a G3 1Z, gasoline engine, manufactured in 1995, with an aftermarket engine and electrical system from 1994.
Sometimes, when I try to start the car, all the lights on the dashboard go out, and only the starter motor works, but the diesel pump apparently doesn't engage. Consequently, the car doesn't start.
During the conversion, the immobilizer was deactivated (because my key no longer has one).

What could be the cause? Is relay 109 a possibility?

Hello,

The problem is likely with relay 109. I had already ordered a new one as a precaution. After replacing the relay, the error reappeared immediately. It seems that the socket in the central electrical unit had a poor connection to the relay.
The only thing that was new to me was that the glow plug system starts when the relay is not functioning properly.
Gruss Oliver.

So, with the old relay?

Well, the relay has two circuits, and the motor computer can detect malfunctions in either of them.

-> The coil can generally be monitored via the corresponding switching output (like solenoid valves, etc.).

-> The main contact switch, among other things, restores power to the motor control unit.

Perhaps all the defective 109 models described here previously had a problem in the load circuit, and yours is the first one with a problem in the control winding area, which triggered an unknown reaction from the EDC?
That's pure speculation. To clarify things, it would be interesting if you could take a closer look or examine it in some other way.
