@ dieselmartin:

The 1.3 CDTI, also known as the JTD, has hydraulic lifters, just like the 1.9 CDTI (1.9 JTD 16V).

Only the older Unijet models don't have them. Although I don't really see the advantage of hydraulic lifters. Checking them every 40,000 km isn't a big deal.

I understand what you're getting at. Disassembling all the plastic parts takes time, and therefore costs money during maintenance. However, since hydraulic components can sometimes fail, checking the valve clearance is simply a preventative measure. I've owned Fiat gasoline and diesel cars for 7 years, and so far, I haven't needed to adjust the valve clearance because nothing has ever been out of adjustment.

Therefore: It's all about making money! icon_evil.gif

Exactly...

and so far, I have never experienced a defective hydraulic component in either my own cars or in the cars of colleagues, friends, or family.

But when I look at my motorcycle, where valve clearances need to be adjusted every year...
Disassembling the entire bodywork and half of the engine takes longer than the actual adjustment.
and time = money.
Nowadays, hydraulic systems are finally making their way into motorcycle engines.

Yes... I also bought a motorcycle with hydrostatic transmission. It's a shame, though, because I have nothing to do in the winter now.
FSooner or later.
Hydros have a significant advantage in that regard.

Hey guys,

Thank you for all the helpful suggestions. This weekend, I had the valves adjusted, and they were all too tight. I thought that when they close, they would be more open... Anyway, one cylinder had almost no compression, and since then, the engine starts perfectly again.

I also changed the diesel filter... It was really annoying to bleed all the air out.

Why do the valve clearances tend to get tighter with tappets? Shouldn't wear cause the clearances to widen and the travel distance to increase...? Does anyone have an explanation?

Many thanks.

Frank.
