The crack extends from the combustion chamber, through a cooling channel in the cylinder head, downwards into the crankcase and into the first groove. I believe the mixture took the easiest path downwards into the crankcase, and the engine didn't run for long after the fault occurred. That's probably why there are no traces on the cylinder liner...

I don't have a tester for VW vehicles yet. I'm seriously considering getting one, but it's quite an expensive investment.
