Aaaaarrghhh, what is that?

Hello everyone,

As I was trying to drive home earlier, my car had a problem.

I started the engine, and it started right up on the first try. However, I heard a loud, harsh knocking sound even at idle, but I didn't think much of it at the time...

Okay, so I put it in first gear and started driving, and the car almost stalled; I initially thought I was in third gear icon_eek.gif (but it was first!). There was zero power. And a really loud, metallic clanking sound; I barely managed to get it out of the driveway, and it wasn't getting any better...

Okay, so here's the best part: I stopped, turned the ignition off and then on again, started the engine, and everything was normal.
The drive home was as usual (my engine's hesitation, late turbo boost -> you know my little quirks icon_wink.gif), so everything was normal...

Now my question: What was that? I've never experienced anything like it before.

I've driven without the LMM before, and at that time, it had significantly more power compared to what it has now.

I would be grateful for any tips...

Best regards,
David.

So, it's almost 'normal' for the 1Z to sometimes (quite rarely) make a metallic clicking sound after starting. It's a rather crude noise.

I've experienced it a couple of times with the 1Z engine, and I've also heard about it from others.

I can't tell you what it is either, because it only happens once and then it's gone, so you can't study it properly.

Tips:
- Crankshaft pulley for the timing belt. I would check to make sure it's securely fastened, just to be on the safe side.
- Oil and water consumption due to the head gasket (mine used a lot of oil once because the shaft of the turbocharger was broken, which caused a significant leak).

Best regards, Rainer.

Oil and water levels are fine, and the car isn't smoking.

What do you think about this: I probably have a problem with my fuel injection system. Could it be that something was 'jammed' in it, preventing enough diesel from being injected?

Unfortunately, I haven't received the right tool yet to open the lid and address the difficulty in opening it. (damn triangular screw).

Hi.

The lack of performance could explain it, but the hammering... icon_question.gif icon_question.gif

A more likely cause, in my opinion, is a loose connection or a high resistance in the positive supply line to the pump.
It's connected to the signal box and the nozzle adjuster.
When there is low voltage, the pump barely and opens, and the injection timing is too early, which could explain the knocking.

After 'rebooting' it, the problem disappeared. Of course, it's difficult to find the cause now. I'm just going to observe whether it reappears (maybe tomorrow morning?). A problem with the steering should usually become noticeable during driving...!?
As I said, it happened only once so far, and I haven't had any problems while driving since then. Let's see what happens tomorrow...
But thank you very much to all of you.

This morning, everything was as usual: it started up perfectly, and I didn't notice anything unusual.
I drove around today without the radio on, just to listen.
But nothing unusual was noticed. Well, I'll ignore it this one time and hope it doesn't happen again.

Best regards.
David.

Hi,

I recently had the same problem as you!

I set off in the morning without any problems... After a short stop, I heard a really loud knocking sound and there was no power. The car could only manage about 40 km/h.
After a restart, the error was resolved.

At VW, they read the error memory. The error code indicated that the control unit was DEFECTIVE. The error was then cleared, and the problem has not reappeared since.

According to the mechanic at VW, the engine had been running in an emergency mode.

Hopefully, this has been helpful...

Best regards,
Chris

Hi David,

You shouldn't install Windows on the control unit. icon_biggrin.gif icon_lol.gif

Damn, I just read the error codes.

'The application will now close due to an unexpected error. Please restart your car.'

icon_question.gif icon_lol.gif icon_lol.gif

Okay, just kidding...

But I think it's all leading to a problem. The issue with the knocking hasn't reappeared (yet), but on Friday I had a very strong, single jolt (which I've never experienced before). It felt like the engine momentarily stalled. Could it perhaps be the relay for the control unit (without Windows, Bertil icon_wink.gif)...?

Let's see, today when I get home, I'll plug in the diagnostic tool, maybe there's something stored in the error memory like with iffi.

Hi David,

Take a look at the connectors on the pump (8-pin and 3-pin). There might be water inside, which could be causing resistance.

Hi Bertil,

That's quite a word. I've actually thought the same thing, especially since I had one recently. So, it's definitely possible. I'll check everything today. Thanks for the tip...

David.

Hi!

It can only be related to the electronics.
Either the control unit has a problem (likely a cold solder joint), or it's as Ulf already described.

Hello,

Thanks again for your excellent suggestions.
Your guesses were spot on, and the error memory confirms it.

00765 - Slide Control Travel [?Sensor (G149)

00539 - Fuel Temperature Sensor (G81)

65535 - No Errors OR Control Module Malfunction.

Definitely the pump connector!!!
Thank you again...

David.
