The following are common causes of coolant loss in the 2.0 TDI engine:
- Oil cooler leak (heat exchanger for engine oil and coolant).
- Leak in the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler.
- Leakage at the cylinder head (hairline cracks -> white smoke), frequently observed in vehicles manufactured between 06/2003 and 12/2003, specifically with the 16V cylinder head. The defect in the cylinder head can also lead to starting problems. The 8V cylinder heads are unremarkable in this regard.
