Hello, dear community.
This is my first post, and I'd like to introduce myself.
My name is Thilo, I'm from the area near Hildesheim, and I work as a motor vehicle mechanic. Until recently, I worked as a diagnostic technician at a large VW center, specializing in troubleshooting.
In my free time, I work in motorsports as a racing technician at GRT Gifhorn, and I'm also building a small, sporty car for street use. Which brings me to the actual reason for this thread.
This is a 1998 Seat Arosa in which I installed a 1.8T engine with 225 horsepower from an Audi S3 (engine code: BAM). I also used the corresponding shift lever surround (8L0 920 932 N) and engine control unit (8N0 906 018 BH) that are compatible with the engine. However, the STE (immobilizer control unit) and MSTG (transmission control module) are from different vehicles, and I don't have the programmed keys, which is causing a WFS (Write Flash Sequence) problem.
Is there a way to completely reset both control units to their factory settings, so that I can then create a new WFS (Vehicle Function Specification) with three new components (STE, MSTG, key)?
What about the 4-digit PIN?
Thank you very much for the answers!!! Gruß, Thilo

Hi Thilo,
The procedures differ depending on whether you are using WFS version 2 or WFS version 3. Given the year of manufacture, you might still be using version 2, which simplifies the process somewhat.

Hi!
Okay, the parts are definitely WFS3. It's a 2002 model, and I have the vehicle ID and the immobilizer ID entered.
How should I imagine that it will work with a WFS2 system?
And where is one supposed to get the PIN code, since it's only available online with VAG these days?
Can the control units be completely reset to their factory settings?
I'm asking this because VAG states that when replacing two of the three WFS components, the third one must also be replaced.
Unfortunately, I've never tried anything outside of the VAG guidelines, so I'm really a beginner in that area. Gruß, Thilo

Good question. I would have rather expected that either _all_ STG WFS2 _or_ WFS3 should be compatible; whether a mixture is possible .
The easiest solution would probably be to use a 'suitable' engine control unit (ECU) with WFS2 and a combination instrument with WFS2.
"Unfortunately, I think the 7-digit PIN is only available from the dealer, although I've also read about a corresponding 'tool' somewhere."
Best regards, Rainer.

No, I don't want to get involved in that at all.
Both control units come from the same model (8L1S29), but not from the same car (i.e., different vehicle identification numbers). I was already aware that the WFS3 is used there, and I have wired the harness in a way that everything works.
The issue is that VAG states that if three unrelated WFS components (MSTG, STE, and key) are involved, all of them must be replaced to allow for the adaptation. Therefore, I want to know if it's possible to completely reset the STE and MSTG so that I can enter a completely new chassis number and adapt the control units to each other. Gruß, Thilo

Generally, it doesn't matter with WFS-3 if the parts come from different vehicles (different WFS IDs and chassis numbers). The WFS IDs and chassis numbers are transferred during the adaptation process, meaning the engine control unit adopts the data from the instrument cluster. A complete reset is possible, both with WFS-3 and newer models with component protection, but these are techniques not intended for the general public and are likely not relevant to you, as your problems can be solved using conventional methods.
Whether the WFS login is 7 digits or 4 digits is ultimately irrelevant. The fact is that you need a specific login for each WFS ID, so in your case, you need one login for the engine control unit and another for the instrument cluster. There is also the possibility of querying WFS logins, not only online but, according to Volkswagen, also via fax (GVO). If in doubt, you can always have a speedometer calibrator/tuner read the corresponding logins from the two control units.

Thank you very much for the detailed answer.
Then I will continue searching for an engine control unit... because I'm too cheap to buy a new one . Gruß, Thilo

Oh, I just noticed that the thread is 1 year old, so I think the problem is no longer relevant .

Ugh, but exactly 1 year.
Well then, nothing personal.
