Hello everyone,

I somehow managed to damage my control unit while trying to have some connectors soldered. I'm not sure exactly what's broken, whether it's cold solder joints or if the chips themselves are damaged... I have no idea, but it's a real shame.
I'm going to install a new one first.
I have one myself with the part number 028 906 021 DF.

Can I install a part with the part number 028 906 021 C? (I'm surprised that...)
it only has one letter... icon_rolleyes.gif )
Probably from a 1-series model, manufactured in 1994. Mine was manufactured in 10/1996... What should I be aware of regarding this?

Thank you in advance, Nico.

Hello RazsmithII,

It's best to leave that alone! The 1Z engine has at least a different ESP (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system, different injectors, and only produces 90 horsepower.

Get an MSG (module control unit) from Schrotti or at e***, and make sure to get the correct part number. At the official dealer, the MSG costs €930.

Incidentally, the installation cannot be performed without a diagnostic device, as the WFS (likely referring to a specific system or component) will interfere.

Good luck!

Freggel.

....okay....I've also decided to abandon the 1Z project...thanks, Freggel.

Now, the fundamental question: Is there any website that lists which car, with which engine code (after adaptation), is compatible with which control unit software version, and which are not??

For example, I currently have a TCU (Transmission Control Unit) with either '021 GS' or '21 GN' markings, and one of them came from an A4 AFN. I'm not sure if it's simply a case of the channels being swapped within the TCU, or if it's not possible to make it work at all.

To adjust:
If I need to go to the 'friendly' (presumably a service center or dealership), theoretically the car (i.e., the instrument cluster with the speedometer) should be present, as it probably won't work just with the key. Is that correct?

Sure, no problem. Here's the translation:

'Thank you in advance, best regards...'

The website does not exist.

Keys are irrelevant when customizing a new MSTG.
You always need the STG (speedometer or separate unit) that contains the WFS (wheel speed sensor) and the MSTG (multi-sensor control unit).
If you don't want to spend half a day assembling a car's wiring harness, it should come pre-installed icon_wink.gif.

Rudi

Thank you... so, that means I can easily swap a ...021 GN or a ...021 GS for a factory-installed ...021 DF with the proper adjustments. Is this something a complete novice like me can do with a diagnostic tool from Rainer?
Since my car isn't roadworthy anymore, it would actually be more expensive to have it towed to the dealership than to buy a diagnostic tool. icon_idea.gif I've always wanted to have one. icon_smile.gif

No, that's not what it means.

The engine will start with the other STGs, after appropriate adjustments.
You can, for example, access the WFS (e.g., via VAG-COM), but you should be prepared for some amusing effects.

I once had a Passat dataset in my Golf, and after a while, it started to...
Turn on the front light, it will blink (but not in emergency mode).
Cause: In this particular Passat, the second brake pedal switch had a different wiring configuration and was...
not recognized icon_eek.gif

The STG Base hardware should be compatible; if you experience any unusual effects, you can also consult with a tuner who is knowledgeable about soldering and hardware.
Go to someone nearby, ask them to install a DF dataset and modify the corresponding inputs accordingly.

Best regards,
Rudi

Am I understanding correctly that if the STG files only have a different index at the end, for example, "a" instead of "b", and if you obtain the correct software, there shouldn't be any problems?

No - unfortunately not. I have slightly modified the wording.

Are there any "basic rules" that one should keep in mind when installing a different component?

Or does one really have to decide on a case-by-case basis, or is it necessary to try things out?

It has to be decided on a case-by-case basis.
