Hello fellow diesel enthusiasts!

Does anyone have experience with chip tuning for the PD 150 (ARL) engine?
I test-drove a chip from MTM, and the difference was...
almost undetectable icon_cry.gif
Is it conceivable that it's simply no longer possible without disassembling the engine?
to endanger the durability icon_question.gif

Best regards,
chrigu

I recommend CTK from Kiel. The owner personally works on these engines and has serviced cars for people I know, all of which are reliable. He also works for several car dealerships. Mine is still relatively new... I think it will last a long time too. He offers an upgrade that you should definitely notice:

VW Golf IV 1.9 TDI 150 PD, chip tuning - €815.
1896 cc engine displacement, 150 horsepower (original), 185 horsepower (modified), 320 Nm torque (original), 420 Nm torque (modified).

best regards, j.

Best regards to the transmission icon_smile.gif.
It is only designed to handle a maximum of 320 Newton meters.

I think that's just a rumor. An engine with a rated torque of 320 Nm won't be paired with a transmission that can only handle a maximum of 320 Nm.

Where did you get your information?

Hello,
In a previous discussion, I heard that the 6-speed transmissions are designed for 350 Nm of torque, while the 5-speed ones are rated for just over 300 Nm. This explains why PD engines with a 6-speed transmission have a torque output of 310 Nm (115 hp) or 320 Nm (130 and 150 hp). There is at least one version with 115 hp that uses a 5-speed transmission, in which case the torque is reduced to 285 Nm.

'That's true, but the 115 hp engine is also available without being restricted to 285 Nm of torque and with a 5-speed gearbox. That's what I have in my 2000 Passat, so the gearbox must have been reinforced.'

Am I mistaken, or does the Passat have a longitudinally mounted engine, which means it has a completely different (and more stable) transmission?

The 74 kW (100 hp) TDI engine in the Passat also produces 250 Nm of torque (240 Nm in the Golf 4).

It's no coincidence that the 6-speed transmission is called the MQ350 (motor transverse, 350 Nm).

Allowing more Nm to pass through the transmission only increases the probability of failure. That is, even with the standard configuration, transmissions sometimes fail prematurely, but this number is still below a value that VW considers acceptable. For the standard configuration, VW deems the failure rate at over 350 Nm to be too high, which is why there's a limit. Of course, it's possible to try and run 400 Nm through the transmission, and it might last forever. It's all just a matter of the probability of failure. And that probability should already be significantly higher at 420 Nm than at 320 Nm.

In my opinion, the probability of failure is influenced not only by luck and torque, but also significantly, if not decisively, by driving style. However, it's difficult to quantify driving style with numbers.
or what?

Of course, the wear and tear depends on how you drive.
But what's the point of tuning if I can barely accelerate?
Then I'll be as fast as before.

A race car that breaks down after crossing the finish line is running at its limit, but 'ours' should ideally last a little longer. We need to add more monitoring displays to indicate (in numbers) when it's time to ease off the accelerator. An MFA (multifunction display) with oil temperature would be great, but boost pressure or even a triaxial accelerometer would be nice. In normal operation (part load/2500 rpm), almost everything remains the same with good chip tuning. However, being able to run at full throttle for half an hour without damage should always be possible.
best regards, j.

In Switzerland, you'll get a huge amount of trouble if you do that.
Can you even manage to drive at full throttle for half an hour? icon_twisted.gif icon_twisted.gif
I always enjoy the thrust icon_biggrin.gif when accelerating.
Somehow, you get addicted, and after a year, the Kikk is gone icon_confused.gif.
Then we need something stronger icon_biggrin.gif.

@MichaelViewing profile: Michael:
The point is the manner of driving, not necessarily just the absolute speed.
This refers to things like how you start the car from a standstill, how you engage the clutch, etc.

Regards,

Olaf.

Let's go back to the original question. I drive an ARL engine in my Leon and am currently considering installing a KW Systems box. I've also done some research on tuning the ARL engine. In the Seat forum, some people are using *** chips (183 hp) and are really unhappy with them. They report significant black smoke emissions. However, many of these engines tend to produce more soot even in their stock configuration. Then there are others with *** chips (175 hp, 375 Nm) who are satisfied. This option focuses more on torque, so the top speed isn't much higher than stock. Wendland tuning also received positive reviews. Generally speaking, this engine has a lot of potential for improvement from the factory. Many people have taken their stock ARL engines to a dynamometer. The results ranged from 158 to 180 hp. Driving comparisons with more powerful gasoline engines confirmed these results. That's why many people choose not to tune at all. Regarding the durability of the ARL engine, there are no negative experiences yet. However, there are occasional reports of faulty turbochargers, both in stock and tuned versions, sometimes even with low mileage. But that's the only issue. Although, the overall mileage of these vehicles isn't very high yet. Generally, I wouldn't recommend exceeding 180 hp and 390 Nm for this engine. The best thing to do is take your car to a dynamometer and have them measure your stock power output. By the way, it takes several thousand kilometers for PD engines to reach their full performance potential!
