I'm still in the process of converting my Polo sdi 1.9 (year 2004) to run on marine fuel. The engine is now running without the engine control unit (ECU), and the fuel injection pump has been converted to a mechanical system. The coolant temperature sensor probably only works with the ECU, or can I connect a simple temperature gauge to it instead? It would be great if the sensor could remain in place.
Best regards, Kopi.

The feeler is a simple resistor.
You can connect whatever you want there.
It can remain connected even without electrical connections; in fact, it must, otherwise the cooling water will leak out.
I don't quite understand the question...

Hello.
At the VW workshop, they told me that this sensor only works in conjunction with the control unit, just like the oil pressure sensor. I'm not entirely convinced. Of course, I would leave it in if it's not working and install another one somewhere that displays the information without a control unit.
Best regards, Kopi.

OK.
Therefore, it remains to clarify what "works" means.
The sensor is a dual sensor - one for the control unit and one for the display in the speedometer.
In my terminology, the sensors are passive, which means they always function because they constantly adjust their resistance, regardless of whether anyone is interested (whether it's the control unit or anyone else) or not.
If VW means "reporting a resistance to the TCU" as a "function," then that obviously cannot happen without the TCU, because the TCU is no longer present .

Great!
So, it would work on the speedometer or other displays. I'm actually almost there, and my SDI outboard motor will be finished soon.
Thank you. Best regards, Kopi.

Hello Kopi,
an SDI outboard motor?
Are you absolutely sure it won't be an inboard engine?
Please provide some specifications (engine, power, boat, transmission ratio, propeller size, etc.).
