Hello,
What do you think about an AJM engine with 200,000 km?
Best regards,
Ristic.

It depends on how it has been treated. Generally, with regular maintenance and careful use, they can reach 350,000 km, although they are slightly less robust in the crankshaft area (piston pin bore, etc.) than the later models with 130 hp.
However, they are not really designed for continuous full-throttle operation, like most engines in this series.
So, no engine for complete idiots . 3B5 AJM

Mine has 211,000 kilometers on it and still has the original head gasket. I drive 70 kilometers every day and I'm very happy with it. It uses about 6 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers and approximately 0.5 liters of oil every 15,000 kilometers.
At 180,000 kilometers, the clutch, including the dual-mass flywheel, was replaced. At 190,000 kilometers, the alternator was replaced, and at 192,000 kilometers, the fuel injectors were replaced. Since then, it has been running perfectly again, every single day. Passat Variant BGW 2005

Thank you!
Are there differences between AJM engines before and after the year 2000? Or are all AJM engines the same?
Are engines with a distributor injection pump significantly more stable and less prone to repairs?
Best regards,
Ristic.

Timing belts manufactured before the year 2000 were replaced every 60,000 km. After that, the design of the tensioner bearing on the cylinder head and the tensioner itself were changed, so that the timing belt only needs to be replaced every 90,000 km. You can definitively identify this by the stamping number on the cylinder head (everything else is speculation). It is not possible to retrofit the 90,000 km interval if the original cylinder head is still installed.
Whether the distributor pump motors actually last longer -- I have also seen these motors that don't reach 200,000 km. So, as already described, it's relative. 3B5 AJM

Up to engine number AJM185670, the belt drive is included in the 60,000 km service interval. From engine number 185671 onwards, it is included in the 90,000 km service interval.
AJM185671 rolled off the production line on January 3, 2000. Passat Variant BGW 2005

Okay. However, if the ZK (likely referring to a component) has already been replaced as described above, the engraving number is the determining factor. 3B5 AJM

Hi,
Thank you for the answers!
What do you think about TDI engines with 101 hp? Are these engines more reliable than AJM engines?
Do 101 hp TDI engines also experience problems with piston pin bore or cylinder head gaskets?
Is the performance difference between 101 and 116 horsepower noticeably significant?
Best regards,
Ristic.

That's just as relative. It depends on what has been done with the engines so far. My in-laws' Passat AVB has 270,000 kilometers on the clock. Nothing significant has broken down yet. Even the original PDE injectors are still in place. It also shows flawless values in the diagnostic data.
My parents' Golf AXR now has 140,000 kilometers, and the battery needed to be replaced when it had 108,000 kilometers (due to a stuck VTG).
The issue with the piston pin bore only occurs with the AJM engine. But as I said, mine has 213,000 kilometers and neither the connecting rod bearings nor the head gasket have ever failed. Passat Variant BGW 2005
