Hello,

After reading far too many opinions on the topic of chip tuning, I'm 'no wiser than I was before.'
Hält der Motor? Individualtunning oder Box? Consumption?

My questions are intended to improve understanding.

Does the increased torque have a lasting impact on bearings, tolerances, etc.?
Does the engine achieve higher compression due to the increased boost pressure?
Is the injection pressure higher?
Could the engine be running at a higher speed because the rated load is applied later in the process?
Does higher boost pressure damage the turbocharger?
Why shouldn't you tune up an old engine?
What are the weaknesses of the mechanics?

Thank you for your interest.

Hello ObenbeiMutti,

Your questions have been discussed quite frequently here before, so you're unlikely to find many answers to such general questions. Therefore, the only thing that will help you with these types of questions in this forum is: SEARCH AND READ! Especially the technical articles in this forum are helpful.

However, since every beginning is difficult, here are a few links that might help you.

Individual tuning or a tuning box?
Compare Powerbox vs. Chiptuning: https://community.dieselschrauber.org/en/viewtopic.php?t=3063
10cent Instructions: https://community.dieselschrauber.org/en/viewtopic.php?t=3208

Does the increased torque have a lasting impact on bearings, tolerances, etc.?
'Of course, any increase in performance will naturally increase wear and tear on the storage components and shorten the engine's lifespan. However, a moderate increase in performance should hardly be noticeable in terms of lifespan.'

Does the engine achieve higher compression due to the increased boost pressure?
No, you're not changing anything about the compression ratio. But, of course, tuning will increase the peak pressure. (This increases the stress on the head gasket, but it usually still holds up.)

Is the injection pressure higher?
As long as you don't modify the fuel injection pump: No (keyword: 11mm or 12mm pump plungers).

Could the engine be running at a higher speed because the rated load is also applied later?
A chip can be programmed to produce more power in the higher RPM range, and it can also be programmed to allow for a higher rev limit. However, this is not very useful for diesel engines (keyword: decreasing efficiency).

Does higher boost pressure damage the turbocharger?
See inventory levels.

Why shouldn't you tune an old engine?
For the same reason as buying a new one: see inventory levels. But: In my opinion, it's also not more harmful to tune up an old one than a new one.

Where are the weaknesses of the mechanics?
The turbocharger doesn't like being over-revved. So, don't crank up the boost pressure too high. And constant full throttle isn't necessary, even with tuned engines. Otherwise, a TDI is actually quite stable.

Thank you for your interest.
Please, I hope this has been helpful and encourages further reading in this forum...

Regards,
Private.

I also only got it chipped at 171,000 km.

So far, no problems related to the chip!

Regards,

Manuel.

A few months ago, at 300,000 km, I had a different chip installed in my 1Z.
It runs wonderfully!

Best regards.

P.S.
Hey Manuel, what happened with your engine head problem? Did the Audi workshop cover the costs?
