Hello.

Can anyone tell me about the durability of the 115 hp PD engine in the Golf IV or Passat?

Taugt das 6 - Gang Getriebe von der Haltbarkeit her etwas und wie ist das mit dem hakeligen Schalten von 1. in den 2. Walking in the cold?

I am interested in a used Passat Variant manufactured in May 2000 with 69,000 kilometers, a 1.9 TDI engine with 85 kW, and a 6-speed transmission. According to the private seller, the timing belt is only supposed to be replaced at 90,000 kilometers.

Best regards.

Holger.

Hello,

I'm asking about the timing belt for a VW. For some models, the replacement interval has been shortened to 60,000 km. However, the inspection booklet still states 90,000 km!
The 6-speed transmission is supposed to be more durable than the (older) 5-speed (in terms of torque), so there shouldn't be any problems.
You have to live with the jerky shifting, but it's not always a problem! Both 130 PS TDI engines sometimes still exhibit this (at least in one of the two I've driven so far). I don't think the outside temperature has an effect on it. One car always has it, the other never does icon_wink.gif.

I had the Golf Variant with that engine and didn't experience any problems with the gear shift. However, the gear shift in my current Bora, which has 130 horsepower, is much smoother and more precise.

The 90,000-mile MKB AJM engine was manufactured in model year 2001. It also features an improved 6-speed transmission, which eliminates issues with the 1st and 2nd gears.

Hello.

Thank you for the answers.

'I was recently offered a Passat with the 115 hp PD engine, first registered in May 2000. The seller (a private individual) said that the timing belt only needs to be replaced at 90,000 kilometers. It has 70,000 kilometers on the clock, and a major service was carried out approximately 100,000 kilometers ago, but without replacing the timing belt.'
Could that be possible?

Holger.

Hello Holgmi,

If what BiBo wrote is referring to the model year 2001, then the interval for the timing belt change is incorrect. The model year 2001 was produced from around September 2000 or October 2000, not May 2000. If it was produced in May 2000, it should have had the timing belt changed immediately, and then every 90,000 km (or miles) thereafter. I think they probably use a better belt then. My first belt was supposed to last for 60,000 km, but it lasted 90,000 km. But if you want to be on the safe side, try to negotiate another 500 euros off the price and have the timing belt and water pump replaced now at a VW workshop. That way, you'll get the more durable belt, a 2-year warranty, and the workshop will be liable for any consequential damages!

Stefan.

Hi!
My Audi A4 was manufactured in April 2000. After extensive research due to conflicting information provided by Audi, I was given a maintenance interval of 90,000 km.

Best regards,
Uwe

Hello,

I heard that VW might be using an improved timing belt with a longer service interval (possibly 60,000 miles) for the first replacement on some models.
Is that correct, or is wishful thinking at play?

I'm considering buying a Bora Variant (station wagon) with an 85 kW TDI engine, manufactured in March 2000, with 80,000 km on the odometer.
The previous owners and the (very good) maintenance history are known. Would you recommend buying it or advise against it?

Best regards,
Gerd.

So far, I haven't had any major problems with my AJM engine (now at approximately 72,000 km).

Hi,

The topic might be slowly drifting towards which model year has which timing belt replacement interval, but... the supplier Continental offers only one timing belt: CT948 (120), for all AJM engines, regardless of whether they are in a VW or an Audi, and which model.

More details: you can find them here.

Or check out the 'Tips and Tricks' section!
