Hello!
I was wondering if it's possible to install a 6-speed transmission from, for example, a Golf 4, onto my Golf 3 with an AHU engine.
I'm not looking for a higher top speed, but rather a more relaxed driving experience at 180 km/h.
Thank you.
Best regards,
Henrik

I've also wondered about this (AHU engine in the Ibiza 6k), the same aspect as you. I think the 90hp engine should have enough power to cruise comfortably at around 2500-3000 RPM.

'That's an interesting idea, but as an alternative, you could consider using a longer 5th gear. You don't even need to remove the entire gearbox; you only need to remove the gearbox cover on the driver's side and replace the corresponding gears. You should try searching online; there's a thread that includes the gear ratios and part numbers.'

Okay, so only a transmission from the latest generation Golf (the 1J generation) is an option, whether it's for an A3, Skoda, or Seat. It won't just be a simple transmission swap; at least one driveshaft will need to be different, and the clutch will also need to be replaced, if I'm informed correctly. You'll have to wait for the experts to chime in here!

Okay, as far as I've heard, the transmission from the G4, etc., doesn't fit due to the mounting points.
To the best of my knowledge, the gearbox in the AHU engine has the longest 5th gear, while the 5th gear from the AFN engine is slightly shorter.
I'm not really keen on extending the 5th gear, because that would negatively affect the acceleration, especially on country roads at speeds of 80-100 km/h (mine already has larger injectors, a chip, and an LDE).
I once heard that there's a kit that allows you to attach a different cover to the transmission, so that a 6th gear can be installed. But it probably won't be that simple... and hopefully it won't be too expensive.
Ideally, a 6-speed transmission from a PD-TDI engine would be perfect. Is there absolutely nothing that would fit?
PS: With a new clutch? I replaced mine 500 km ago, at a mileage of 220,000 km..........*facepalm*

The longest 5th gear, whoops! I wouldn't have expected that. Okay, I've already pushed mine to its limit with a tailwind, but at RPMs beyond the comfortable range (*g ~4300).
It would be nice to have an engine speed of around 2,000-2,500 RPM at a speed of approximately 120-130 km/h.

Yes, I know that .
man hat das Gefühl, der Motor würde wenn er könnte, ihm fehlt bloß der 6. Gang dazu
PS: Please see your website for information on when you anticipate your Digital Multifunction Display will be available. I am very interested and eagerly awaiting its release.

Exactly!
Hmm, my DMFA, that's quite something! I'm also interested, but I feel like if I work on it with full enthusiasm, the rest of my life will be pretty tight. The AVR and interface are right here on the table, but... well!! You need time, preferably unlimited!!

Hi,
That "retrofit kit" idea is too good to be true... it really can't work. How can you effectively access the gears and other components with something like that?
"There's been a lot of discussion about a potential swap... it probably falls into the category of 'not worth it'. The 6-speed gearbox for the Ibiza 6L is likely listed for around 4,000 euros, and on top of that, you'd probably need a new clutch, a new flywheel, and definitely other drive shafts."
The ideal translation is actually... 2000 at 120. It's the same part that Ulf has in his Polo. In the newer Ibiza and probably also the Polo, they changed it again so that it reaches its maximum speed in 6th gear - meaning there will be a need for a 7th gear.
"Such a gentle driving style is really something special, but unfortunately, the industry (as mentioned above) doesn't see it that way in a time when maximum speed and 0-100 acceleration are all that matter. I've often wanted to shift into 6th gear..."
@Gerbi: The 90 horsepower Ibiza has a LONGER 5th gear than the one with 110 horsepower, due to the aforementioned maximum speed reasons (90 horsepower: 0.717, 110 horsepower: 0.744). However, it probably wouldn't make a significant difference to swap it in the 110 horsepower model, making it not worth the effort. Does your speedometer go up to 200, or 220? Mine goes up to 220, but even going downhill, you won't reach that speed with the shorter gearing, because the TDI engine would already be revving around 4500 or higher. My maximum speed on the A3 was once 215 on the speedometer, on a fairly steep downhill section.

'There are conversion kits to upgrade from a 5-speed to a 6-speed transmission, but they are also extremely expensive. What Jan6K wrote is also correct; the flywheel, clutch, and driveshaft inner joints also need to be taken from the 6-speed model.'
'There are other translations for the 5th gear setting available from tuners, which are also very popular for VR6 turbo conversions; I've seen some values as low as 0.65.'

'The speedometer on mine goes up to 200 km/h, and I would say that it could probably go beyond the 190 km/h (indicated) on a straight road, but unfortunately, there's no 6th gear!'
Well, the only 'consolation' is that I live in Switzerland...

No-modification solution: switch to a 96 kW 6L or Polo, but used cars manufactured until approximately Spring 2004: 120 km/h @ 2000 rpm, including tuning potential up to 240 km/h without "over-revving".
Since then, only the short 6-speed transmission has been installed .
(I don't know what it looks like on the Fabia RS.) Gruß Ulf

The Audi A6 V6 TDI Multitronic has the .
And I have it (unfortunately, only for a week).
This is a great cruising experience. It sounds very comfortable because the engine never really revs up unless it's necessary.
When you use the kick-down function, it sounds like a 6-cylinder moped: the engine speed stays at 4000 RPM, and the car just keeps getting faster .
I once read about a conversion kit for the 02A transmission from the US - but 200 (correction: 2000) EUR or USD or so for an extra gear seemed a bit too much .
What is the GKB number of your AHU?

Polo, no, I don't want to go that far . Maybe I'll find some suitable gears for my transmission on the street .

It has also been changed, but I can't say exactly when.
I'd also like a 6th gear, but I'll take comfort in the fact that my 5th gear is longer than the 6th gear in a Touran with an AXR engine (155 vs. 140 km/h at 3000 rpm). 01er Skoda Fabia Combi ATD

'140 km/h at 3,000 RPM in 6th gear on a Touran with 10% more horsepower? Definitely not, at most it's what the speedometer indicates. The Tourans at my workplace reach almost 3,000 RPM when the speedometer shows 130 km/h.'
