Hello everyone,
Recently, my power window on the passenger side "gave up." Regardless of the switch position used to operate the window, it only responded by moving the glass downwards (even when the switch was in the "close" position). All attempts to move the window upwards using the switch failed.
A quick visit to the friendly Audi dealership provided a temporary solution, as two mechanics pulled the window up against the motor's force. It has been stuck in that position for several weeks now, and I haven't dared to use the passenger window switch again.
This is, of course, not a permanent situation, and I would like to get my window lifter repaired.
Has anyone else had similar experiences, especially with an AUDI A3? Oh, and of course, the friendly AUDI dealer immediately wanted to replace the entire window regulator, at a cost of approximately 250 EUR!!!
Perhaps someone in this forum has experienced similar problems and can offer some advice on troubleshooting and repair.
Thank you in advance.
Vehicle details: AUDI A3, 1.9 TDI, first registration 12/96, engine code AGR, 127,000 km, all original.

Hello TDI community!
Here's a small update on my power window problem. Today, I removed the interior door panel of the passenger side door to get a closer look at the issue. I was able to remove the motor, which is attached to the window regulator flange with three Torx screws (T30), and disconnect it from the coupling.
An electrical functional test showed that the motor works perfectly without load , meaning it rotates in both directions.
In the next step, I reinstalled the motor and performed a function test with the side panel removed. Opening the window was not a problem; the glass moved down very easily.
When closing, it was now very clear that the panel was not moved evenly upwards, but that the front was raised more than the back, which ultimately leads to the panel getting stuck . The motor reacts to this with its "jam protection" and immediately reverses the direction of rotation, thus moving the panel downwards in the opposite direction.
The problem clearly lies in the window mechanism, specifically the window guide or window mechanics, which cause the glass pane to become jammed during the upward movement.
ThaThat's it.
"But how can you replicate that? Does anyone have experience repairing this type of drive mechanism?"
I was eventually able to close the window again by applying pressure to the rear corner of the glass, which prevented it from tilting and thus helped the motor to function properly.
Oh, before that, I went back to the AUDI dealer, who clearly diagnosed a defective engine. Of course, that also costs a whopping 143 EUR !!!
I'm glad they didn't have the engine in stock, so I could take a closer look at it myself.
The window lifter still doesn't work, but at least I now know the exact cause, and fixing it should definitely be cheaper than replacing the entire motor.
Thank you in advance for your help and contributions (and for your willingness to read my lengthy posts) !!!
Regards,
Alex.

Hello Alex,
There is a documentation available for this problem.
Quote: |
Problem description.
Door panel blocked when opening/closing.
Cause:
The plastic actuator for the window lifter mechanism, located in the nipple chamber area, is broken. As a result, the window can no longer be opened or closed.
Solution:
Lower the window glass as far as possible (until approximately 3 cm above the lower stop). Remove the window glass. Lift the glass from the drive pins and slide it slightly upwards. Detach the glass holder from the drive pin. Push the window lifting cable out of the damaged drive pin section in the area of the nipple chamber. With your thumb, touch the drive pin on the inside and detach it from the guide rail towards the outside. Install the new drive pin, part number: 4B0 837 463, in the reverse order and reattach it to the guide rail. Clip the cable with the drive pin nipple into the nipple chamber of the plastic drive pin. Attach the glass holder to the drive pin.
Damage numbers:
6452 / L15
6452 / R15

It's frustrating again to see a contracted workshop start a recall campaign at the customer's expense and without any logic or reason.
Apparently, there's no point in VAG even bothering to maintain these damage codes. Tschüss

Thank you, Michael II!!!! Thank you very much for your tip!!
You were absolutely right; it was only one of the two retaining clips in the nipple chamber that was broken. This caused the glass to jam whenever the window lifter was activated.
This part cost me exactly 2.15 EUR!
The repair shop's estimate amounted to a hefty 250 EUR. Quite a difference, isn't it?
Okay, I have to admit, it's quite a hassle to replace this cheap spare part. But it's definitely worth it!!
Once again, thank you for the invaluable tip. Without it, the parts department at the Audi dealership wouldn't have been able to find the correct part. They only list the complete window regulator assembly in their search function, which costs a hefty 70 euros.
Regards,
Alex.

Hello Donalexo,
Since there is a claim number for this, your Audi partner should actually cover all the costs. They can then pass those costs on to the VAG group.
But actually, you're right: Why would you let unqualified mechanics mess around with your own car? Tschüss

Well, the successful DIY repair of the window lifter unfortunately still has a slightly bitter aftertaste.
Previously, it was possible to move the side window all the way up or down by simply touching the switch, without having to hold the switch in the corresponding position continuously.
I've been missing this feature since the repair.
Of course, I have already found a post by Marco from February 19, 2003, using the search function, in which he describes the "programming" of the window frames.
However, unfortunately, this method doesn't work for me. I've tried it several times, but so far, without success. What am I doing wrong?
Or is the window lifter motor in my 1996 Passat equipped with different electronics than the one in Marco's 1998 Passat?
By the way: Does anyone know if the window lifter motor is equipped with a measuring system (incremental or absolute)? I think it is, because how else would you "program" the end stops?
Thank you for your contributions!
Regards,
Alex.

Hello everyone!
Does anyone have any idea why the method that works on a 1998 Passat doesn't work on my A3's window lifters?
Do you have any ideas on how to make it so that pressing the window switch again will open or close the window?
Thank you for your tips and opinions.
