Tiptronic: G4 Variant Automatic Transmission Experience

Hello everyone,
I was offered a Golf Variant (130 hp) with an automatic Tiptronic transmission for sale. I've only driven manual transmissions so far and have no experience with VW automatic transmissions, especially Tiptronic. I always thought that manual transmissions were more fuel-efficient, but according to the owner, the fuel consumption is between 5.5 and 6 liters.
Is the Tiptronic transmission any good? Is it prone to problems? Should I avoid it?
