Unfortunately, that's a silly question.
I have successfully deactivated the airbag in several Golf 4 models manufactured from 1998 onwards.
The Passat, manufactured in 1999, has the exact same airbag as yours.

"I can always unlock one side, but nothing happens on the other side?"

What could be the reason? I've done this on several vehicles before, but only one side of the Passat is giving me trouble.

Thank you for the tips, I'm almost at my wit's end.

(Sorry for the question, but I'm just stuck.)

Because you're likely to miss the bracket with the screwdriver.

The spring ends are loosened towards the center of the steering wheel; therefore, using a screwdriver, you need to pry them outwards from the outside. You might want to use a smaller screwdriver to get a better feel for it. Don't worry, you're not the only one who has had trouble with this. icon_wink.gif

Take a picture for next time.

Thank you for the tip.
However, I can't quite understand why one side works and the other doesn't.
Did I mess something up with the other one?
I spent half an hour trying it with various screwdrivers, and "always trying to lever the screwdriver upwards"?

"How can something like this be designed, especially since it has always worked well in other cases?"

Therefore, only qualified personnel should work on the airbag system. icon_rolleyes.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

.

The safety measures regarding ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) are certainly more extensive than in most workshops, including special grounding, specialized screwdrivers, and other similar precautions.

However, that has little to do with unlocking.
The original VW documentation doesn't offer any further information on this. It has worked many times before, but now nothing is happening.

VW documentation also shows pictures of how it's done. And yet, people without the proper qualifications have no business doing this. Not even to 'unlock' it! }

The reason I do it myself is because I can't rely on the VW workshops.

In the driver's side airbag of a Golf 4, a cable that was too short was installed. VW replaced the airbag once. The second time, the repair was again performed incorrectly. The third time, a different workshop was consulted, and it was determined that a longer cable needed to be installed (and this issue was already known).
A workshop foreman even said, "Yes, we tried to trigger the airbag, but it was defective."
I have experienced this circus multiple times.
Since there's an airbag manufacturer nearby, I was able to easily find out more information.
Conclusion: In VW vehicles, the airbag unit itself very, very, very rarely breaks down. The manufacturer told me that the probability of it happening is much lower than winning the lottery.

Since I don't want to be ripped off, I'll just do it myself.
Except for that one persistent case, it has always worked.
I also look forward to your help.

However, in Germany, it is prohibited without proof of technical competence. The proof of technical competence is a document that is supposed to demonstrate that the person has the necessary knowledge. As you yourself have noted, this is not always the case.

I don't know how it is in Austria or Switzerland. It would be interesting if someone here had information about that.

Best regards, Rainer Kaufmann.

Well, without wanting to criticize anyone, we also don't know if everyone who posts here actually has a driver's license or a valid driver's permit.

We don't have to either. That's not our responsibility. We should just point out the dangers without disempowering the citizens.

I highly doubt whether it is possible to prevent a private individual from doing whatever they want with their property (car) without harming third parties or the environment.

Therefore, I believe that constructive assistance is more appropriate than ignoring the user, especially for safety reasons. The user will not abandon their plan anyway.

And precisely because we don't know, and because he won't stop, we should show RESPONSIBILITY and not support such things without proper qualifications.

The other way around, it doesn't make sense. When something happens, the screaming is loud. icon_sad.gif

You can take that personally however you like. There's always a lot of noise and commotion. And frankly, this won't lead to anything good. A highly complex vehicle today consists not only of an airbag, but also of a thousand other safety-relevant components, such as brakes, suspension, steering, ESP, ABS, etc.

Related inquiries would also need to be directed to so-called "qualified workshops."

Then something will come of it, but it's something that nobody wants.

Incorrect. The remaining components cannot explode due to misuse. The airbags, however, can. Seatbelt pretensioners can also activate in the event of a severe impact. icon_rolleyes.gif

I'm sorry, but I find your careless attitude towards this topic to be absolutely awful. icon_evil.gif

PS:

Features like ESP/ABS, etc., are also generally excluded. Even simple coding functions are no longer available in VCDS. Ask yourself WHY.

Yes, some, especially workshops and manufacturers.
We've seen this happen before. I experienced it myself: The TÜV (German technical inspection agency) lifts the front of the Audi using triangular supports.
"Expertise is a gray area. If necessary, one must be able to defend one's expertise. When I repair my brakes, I rely on the quality of the parts, the work performed according to repair manuals, professional tools (e.g., a torque wrench), and, if necessary, my profession."
Regarding airbags, the explosives regulations also apply. Therefore, we must always emphasize that only individuals with the appropriate qualifications and training are permitted to handle them.

To prevent things from escalating further, we're going to shut this down for now.

Regarding the closure, everything has already been said icon_wink.gif.
