Hi fellow mechanics,

I removed the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) from our AUDI TDI 1Z and noticed that there is already a noticeable amount of play in the radial icon_exclaim.gif direction (270,000 km after all). Before the engine fails, a new set of bushings plus seals should be installed (-> causing the belt to run crooked).

I have already sent two emails to Henzo from dieselsend.de, but I have not received a response yet (he offers the exchange for about 100 euros). Are there any other companies that offer this service for a similar price?

Thank you very much in advance icon_smile.gif.

Hi,

I think I'll leave the pump as it is and check the timing belt more often. As long as the timing belt doesn't rub against the edge of the tensioner, nothing should happen (hopefully) icon_confused.gif. At least, we'll be wiser if the engine doesn't reach 330,000 km icon_eek.gif.

Hello!

habe auch den 1Z im Audi, die alte Variante mit 182 Nm. I now have...
The odometer reads 355,000 km, and I'm planning to replace the head gasket and timing belt soon. I seem to remember you were planning to do the same thing?!
Regarding the ESP (Electrical Submersible Pump): Is it possible to detect or feel the pump operating even when it's locked in place?

In addition, I have oil leaks on the valve cover. There's also some oil around the ESP wheel and on the timing belt.
Does anyone know what else could be considered an 'oil source' in this case? The ESP (electrical submersible pump) isn't located right next to the cover screw.

Regards,
Lucas.

Hi Lucas,

"Your high mileage is reassuring to me; I think I can't really believe those theories about timing belts running incorrectly."

I removed the cylinder head to replace the head gasket and various seals. I checked the play of the ESP shaft by hand while it was still installed (not axially, but radially). I heard that the radial wear limit is supposedly 0.1mm. In my case, it's estimated to be slightly more.

Regarding the oil leak: replace the camshaft seal and, above all, the intermediate shaft seal icon_exclaim.gif... it's constantly causing problems! I'm also going to replace the hydraulic lifters, valve stem seals, and the crankshaft bolt. Just buy the Elring cylinder head gasket set icon_exclaim.gif – it includes all the seals (except the intermediate shaft seal). I bought the lifters for 64 euros on eBay.

It's a good idea to remove the ABS wheel sensor to get rid of that annoying metal plate behind it, otherwise it will be a pain to install the cylinder head.
