Lupo GTi: LWR Connection Errors - Troubleshooting

Hello,

I'm having problems with a Lupo AVY, manufactured in 2000, where the headlight leveling system (LWR) is not working.

If someone sits in the trunk with the ignition off, the headlights will go down, but they will only adjust back up again when I turn off the ignition, remove the weight from the trunk, and then turn the ignition back on.

"Does anyone have any ideas? I also can't access the control unit; it always says 'too many connection problems with the control unit'."

Was the light turned on during the diagnostic attempt? Older generations of LWR control units can often only be read out when the light is on.

Check what bitrate VCDS briefly displays in the ECU information section (top left) when establishing a connection to the engine control unit. The protocol should be KWP1281.
Bitrate values are approximately 9600 or 10400 bits per second.

I'm not sure how the LWR (Low Voltage Release) is connected. VCDS tried connecting it via CAN, but if it doesn't work through the K-line, that's not surprising.
Is it possible to establish a direct connection to the LWR (multiple attempts), and if so, with which protocol and bitrate?

That leaves us with potentially corroded connectors, cables, or the LWR control unit itself.

Um, does the LUPO have xenon headlights? Because you wrote that when the trunk is loaded, the lights move downwards. Doesn't it have the low beam range adjuster next to the light switch, next to the dashboard dimmer?

I have never actually read or attempted to read a manual LRW (Longitudinal Relaxation Waveform) before.
Most often, the fuse, the actuator motor, or (less frequently) the automatic headlight range adjuster itself is defective. Sometimes, the automatic headlight range adjuster motors become stuck due to lack of use; in such cases, tapping on the motor housing may help.

The Lupo GTI came with Bi-Xenon headlights as standard.

Try an older version of VCDS, such as 10.6 or 12.x. I had the same problem where version 15.x no longer allowed access.
Access is still possible even when the burners are switched off. However, actuator diagnostics will not be available in this case.

Unfortunately, there's still no solution. Whenever I change the position of the LWR sensor with the lights on and then unplug and replug the connector, it will briefly adjust to the correct position, but then it stays there until I unplug and replug it again. It's driving me crazy.

It sounds like the LWR control unit is crashing after a short period of time and no longer responding to anything, neither changes to the sensor nor diagnostic messages.

Does the Lupo already have a dynamic LWR (adaptive damper)?

I suspect that the Lupo has a }static} LWR (Low Beam Range) system, which, in my opinion, only reacts once after "ignition on"...

I only know of two types. Either you have a control knob in the dashboard that allows you to manually adjust the beam range, or there isn't one, and the corresponding sensors in the suspension system handle it automatically.

Since the Lupo is not exactly new, I suspect the beam intensity is manually adjusted.

No, nothing in the Lupo GTI is manually controlled. It has xenon headlights, which automatically include automatic low beam activation, and that's not even something being discussed here.

My former Golf IV also had xenon headlights. From what I could tell (PLEASE NOTE: this is just an observation, not based on knowledge), when you first turned on the lights, the headlights would activate, and then they would remain on. There was no active roll stabilization or anything like that, and the aLWR (adaptive lighting) was far too slow for that. In the control unit, you could see the sensors for both axles, and you could observe changes when the car moved. However, this didn't affect the functionality of the headlights.

Therefore, as Bloesch already mentioned, it is likely a static LWR.

According to parts catalogs, the Lupo and the Seat Ibiza 6L have the same sensor with the same part number.
This means that the ALWR is static and re-calibrates at regular intervals, but not with every bump, acceleration, or deceleration.
It's working exactly as matthiasTDI96 described.
