Hello everyone,

I heard from an acquaintance that there is a long-life oil available for engines with around 130 horsepower (I'm not familiar with the exact engine code) that only needs to be changed every 30,000 kilometers.
Does anyone know if this works with the AJM engine (115 hp common rail diesel), and what brand is this oil?
I have been using Liqui Moly Diesel HighTech so far.

Best regards, Jürgen.

Hi,

The engine code for the 130 HP TDI is ASZ, which is the one I have. It has what's called the "Long Life" property. There's also a specific type of oil that must meet the VW 506 01 standard. Currently, I'm using Castrol SLX.
I wouldn't pour that into a vehicle without synthetic oil. First of all, the juice is incredibly expensive, and frankly, I don't believe in driving 30,000 km with one oil change. I used to change my oil every 16,000 km.
You can find out whether your car has longlife tires in the owner's manual or on the sticker next to the spare tire. The code should be "QG1" (I'm not 100% sure if it's actually "QGi" or something else, I need to check that).
Matthias.

If you're already changing your oil every 15,000 kilometers, then you can definitely use a less expensive brand of oil!
For example, with the 90 hp TDI ALH engine, some versions have a 'longlife' oil specification, while others do not. If you change the oil every 15,000 km (with a new filter) on those engines that are specified for longlife oil, is there anything wrong with using a standard 15W40 or 10W40 oil, which is also used in engines without the longlife specification?

As far as I know, there was never a 130-grade oil available without the 'longlife' specification, so I can't recommend a specific type of oil for that.

By the way, I have the impression that vehicles using long-life oil consume significantly more oil over the 30,000 km interval than those using the older type of oil.

However, the AJM will definitely not make things cheaper for you!

Hello!

I also have a 130 HP PD engine with the AWX code. However, mine needs to go in for service already after only 13,100 kilometers. Have you perhaps had similar experiences?
I don't understand what the 'longlife' thing is supposed to mean!

Best regards, D.

"Longlife" doesn't automatically mean a longer service interval, but rather a service interval that depends on the load. The more cold starts and the higher the stress (especially during the warm-up phase), the sooner you need to bring the vehicle in for servicing. I have seen company vehicles with "longlife" oil that had to come in for servicing every 5000-7000 km. In those cases, they quickly switched to a fixed service interval. These are certainly not representative examples; the average driver typically achieves 30,000 km.

Thank you, Bertil!

Your 'report' stating that some vehicles needed servicing after only 7,000 km has somewhat reassured me.
The only thing that still surprises me is the fact that mine initially displayed the next service interval as being at 15,000 km.
Last week, I had a rental Audi A4 with the same 130 hp engine. At a mileage of 4,500 km, it indicated the next service appointment would be at 22,800 km.

Do your company vehicles also display a service interval exceeding 15,000 kilometers after the service has been performed?

Best regards, D.

Are you the original owner? Are you sure that the maintenance interval reminder (WIV) was activated? On Rainer's website, there is an article about service intervals. It states that when resetting the WIV, it must be reactivated each time. If this was forgotten during the last service, only the standard 15,000 km mileage-based service interval is active.

Okay, with just under 30,000 km on it, that's acceptable.

Unfortunately, these were Volkswagen vehicles, and they only notify you about the remaining range with just 3000 km left. It's not possible to check the remaining mileage there. Also, these are not company-owned vehicles.

What type of oil does it need, according to the VW specification 501 00?

Hello,

PD TDI engines that do not require long-life oil always need oil meeting specification 505.01. PD TDI engines with the long-life requirement (WIV) always need oil meeting specification 506.01.

It is possible to switch back to fixed intervals of 15,000 km for PD TDI engines that were previously using the LongLife oil specification, and use oil meeting the 505.01 standard.

PD TDI engines that are not designed for longlife oil cannot be switched to WIV (Variable Valve Timing) oil, and under no circumstances should you use the 506.01 specification oil, as this could cause the oil film to rupture under high loads because the bearings in these engines are not compatible with longlife oil.

Engine oil that meets the 50501 standard, specifically a 5W40 viscosity grade with special additives designed for PD (Pumpe-Düse) engines.

@ Bertil!

Yes, I am the first owner. According to the service booklet, the 'longlife' oil change interval was supposedly activated upon delivery. However, my Audi workshop informed me that this is no longer verifiable.
Last Friday, I contacted the Audi service hotline regarding this issue. They said they would call me back because the responsible technician was unavailable at that time. I am still waiting for that callback today (Tuesday).
I'm not giving up, though. After all, I still have a warranty.

Best regards, D.
