Golf 5 2.0 TDI Engine Oil: 170HP Performance

Hello,

I own a Volkswagen Golf 5 2.0 TDI with 170 horsepower and a particulate filter.

Currently, I am using 5W30 LL oil and would like to switch to a different type of oil.

Unfortunately, I can't find any other motor oil online that is suitable for my car; it always seems to be only 5W30 LL.

Do you know if I can use a 5W40 oil with a service interval of 15,000 km or 1 year?

The engine itself would also work with a 5W-40 oil that meets the 505.01 standard, but it wouldn't be optimal for the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). The manufacturer clearly specifies the 507.00 standard, which only allows for a 5W-30 oil.

For the sake of maximizing lifespan, a clear "yes" to using a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter).

We could debate this for days; one person prefers this, another prefers that. Ask 10 people and you'll get 10 different opinions. Just use a brand-name oil and be done with it; don't always overthink things. We're talking about a mass-produced engine here.

Yes, if you change the oil annually with a fixed interval, then 5W40 can be used if:

VW Standard 505.01 <- Unit Injector.
and approved for ACEA C3 <- low SAPS/DPF.

Therefore, there are many 5W40 oils that have the approval for use with particulate filter systems (DPF).

Regarding the 0w30 oil, it might be approved, but I'm always very cautious about using it because 0w30 has a reduced HTHS (High-Temperature High-Shear) value to save fuel, which may not be ideal for the high forces generated by a PPD (Particulate Matter Diesel) engine.

However, everyone must decide this for themselves; the small list is only meant to show that there are indeed products available that meet your "requirements."

No, not that 0W-30 oil after 50,000 kilometers. It also has an HTHS value greater than 3.5.

You probably mean the old 0W-30 oil that met the VW 506 01 specification. It indeed had an HTHS viscosity of 2.9.
