I already have the gears. What my workshop is still missing is the puller. icon_twisted.gif That part has been ordered (the old one was broken) and will be used immediately.

Claus.

Hello, I'm also interested in that. I have a 1.9 TDI AHF with the basic 110 hp engine, now upgraded to 136 hp by Oettinger. A longer 5th gear would really be desirable.

best regards

diver

The part numbers are in my car. My car is currently at the workshop because of a faulty head gasket, grr... At a mileage of 92,800 km, coolant leaked out from the outside of the engine block (not into the cylinder itself or the oil), although not much yet, but my instrument panel immediately alerted me to it. The diagnosis indicates prolonged high RPMs and consequently high temperatures, which may have been exacerbated by the deactivated EGR system. VW is covering 40% under good will, but it still costs around €500 including inspection, without parts – which is ridiculous. Regarding the transmission, they are missing some stupid removal tool, so hopefully it can be fixed soon. Lower RPMs on the highway would probably have prevented the gasket from failing.

Regards,
Claus.

Hmm, is the connection stable? I hope this message gets through...
'Nice smoke coming from the engine, did you always rev it that high?'
'As you know, I've tuned my 90s Audi to around 145 horsepower. I'm careful with the RPMs, but even when pushing it hard, it never revs past about 4200...it just cuts out there. Still, that's too much for me; I simply want to be able to drive at a relaxed 200 km/h sometimes.'
No, seriously, he really needs to be a bit more frugal... that's why I want him to.

greetings
I'm sorry, I can't translate that word because it doesn't seem to be a real word in any language I know. It might be a typo or a made-up word. Could you please double-check the spelling?

@Diesel Goette:

Wie hoch hast du ihn denn so im Dauerbetrieb gedreht? And for how long?

For example, driving at full throttle for hours at 4300 RPM, or something similar?

Best regards,

January.

So, please tell me if you know anything specific about the price and the part number.

'Thank you, Tortsch.'

Regarding the RPM: 4600 RPM at 215 km/h, but of course only for short periods, not for hours. However, you often find yourself in RPM ranges above 4000 RPM. I know this isn't ideal, but the gear ratio is simply too short. It's a Golf IV AHF with 81 kW and an ebf gearbox. It has an aftermarket exhaust system (open design, original look), panel air filter, and a chip tuning for 150 hp and 340 Nm of torque. I probably caused the head gasket to fail on Monday. I had to urgently go to Düsseldorf, the highway was clear, the outside temperature was high, and the air conditioning was on. I'll likely get my car back today, and then I'll post the part numbers.

Regards,
Claus.

Hi Claus,
.. might have been facilitated by the deactivated EGR system.

Normally not, because the EGR valve is under load (if it's functioning).

Well, I said it was a favorable condition. If you ease off the accelerator or the EGR system is activated (which lowers the combustion chamber temperature), you still experience temperatures similar to those at full load. In other words, on the highway, you're almost always operating at temperatures that should ideally only be present for short periods.

Regards,
Claus.

Okay, here are the part numbers and an initial driving report (installed today): 02A-311.158-R and 02A-311-361-M, along with the seal for each transmission. VW performed the installation. According to the VW manual, the estimated time required is 1.5 hours. And now, for the good part:)

50 km/h and then into 5th gear at approximately 1000 rpm; from now on, it's like driving an automatic, accelerating to 220 is no problem. The engine speed has decreased by about 250 rpm compared to before. At 2000 rpm, you now have 100 km/h. 180 km/h is finally comfortable to drive at approximately 3500 rpm. What's most pleasing is the much lower noise level and the reduced fuel consumption. Even with a really brisk driving style, the onboard computer says 6.6 liters. I haven't been able to fully test the top speed; I already had to take my foot off the icon_smile.gif. The whole driving experience feels more confident and relaxed than before.

Regards,
Claus.

Do you happen to know which gearboxes this 5th gear fits into? Or are all Golf 3, Golf 4, etc. gearboxes the same in that regard? (Is there possibly still a difference between cable-operated and rod-shift transmissions?)

Has anyone ever installed something like that in an A4 Avant with a AFN engine and a 5-speed transmission?
Manual transmission installed? I'm very interested. - H.P.

@Diesel Goette:

Are the speeds you mentioned speedometer readings, or actual values (i.e., corrected for speedometer inaccuracies)? Because in my car (6K with ASV engine, same gearing as a Golf 3 with AFN engine, tire size 185/15/55), I already see 98 km/h on the speedometer at 2000 RPM, but the actual speed is more like 92 km/h.

Therefore, the question is... or, to put it another way: What were your engine RPMs at those speeds previously?

Because those 250 fewer units only apply at one specific speed; the difference increases with the engine RPM. Or were those 250 units the difference at 180 km/h?

Best regards,

'The part numbers are from the old forum; I was asking about this conversion option back then. The parts cost 140 euros. I don't know if they fit all transmissions within the Volkswagen Group. My transmission has the code 'ebf'. According to the speedometer and tachometer, the engine speed at 200 km/h has decreased by approximately 250-300 RPM compared to before. Previously, at 215 km/h, I was at 4600 RPM, which was in the red zone. As mentioned, Volkswagen performed the conversion, not me.'

Claus.

The parts mentioned above were used in the 90 hp TDI engine found in the third-generation Golf, for example. The transmission code is ASD. The gear ratio is 0.717, which makes it slightly longer than the 0.744 of the AFN engine.
