Hello, I currently have a tuning box from KW-Systems installed in my 2.0 TDI. It's supposed to increase the power to approximately 170 horsepower and 385 Nm of torque. What are your thoughts on the strain this puts on the engine and transmission? Do you think they can handle it (I don't drive at full throttle constantly, but occasionally)? What do you think?

Best regards,

Okay, not a great answer. I was hoping to find out if this is something you can do with *this* engine. I haven't found much information about tuning the 2.0 TDI. I think increasing the power of a 1.9 TDI to 175 hp would probably be a bit too much, which is why I was looking for some opinions, especially since the transmission hasn't really been modified.

Hello Gremlin,

Thank you, I'm glad to receive your reply, because otherwise, only people like that would hang around here.

Well, you're a bit of a silly horse yourself, great post!

Hello and a happy new year to everyone!

'@Wacken, what kind of answers are you expecting? This engine has only recently been released, so how can anyone here give you information about the long-term effects of your specific tuning modification? Such experiences simply don't exist yet.'
It's obvious that the engine and transmission engineers involved aren't here to tell you what tuning potential is hidden within your hardware.
Currently, your question can only elicit 'statements of belief' and 'half-knowledge,' and diesel mechanics are probably not very receptive to that.

I think it's a bit unfortunate that diesel.gustav is getting so personal again.

Thank you, I'm glad to receive your reply, because otherwise, only people like that tend to hang around here.

I hope it remains an open forum where every diesel driver with a technical interest can participate, and where people are not harassed or excluded if they happen to ask a clumsy question. That hasn't been the case so far. This site thrives on the diverse skills, knowledge, and experiences of its members, doesn't it? If a question is annoying, you can simply let it go unanswered, as before, or put a lock on it.

With warmest regards,
Marcus

... and someone, please, quickly get me a lock.

Okay, I understand that there's no long-term experience available yet. I'm just curious about what people think regarding whether the engine can handle this power output. It should be more robust than the 1.9 PD, right? It already has more power from the factory, and I assume it will get even more power in the future. That's all I was wondering.

Best regards,

Oh, guys, please use your brains!

What do you want to hear?

that the motor is designed to operate reliably at its rated power.
that the transmission is designed to withstand the engine's power and torque.

Does the excess power initially affect the clutch, and then subsequently damage all the engine components?
Does the 2.0 TDI engine have any known issues?

Okay, there's nothing new on the topic of tuning. What has already been written hundreds of times also applies to your engine/transmission combination.
'An extra +30 horsepower / +65 Nm always puts stress on the materials and will negatively affect durability. No manufacturer would use materials designed for significantly higher power output, as that would cost too much money. The engine block is probably not significantly more robust than the 1.9-liter, because the 1.9-liter is also available with 150 horsepower as standard. Personally, I don't trust the 2.0-liter engine until after 2 years.'

CU Gremlin.

I already understood that; I was just looking for a few opinions.
'And the 150 hp engine has been modified compared to the 130 hp version, and it has also been discontinued by VW, which probably has its reasons. The 2.0-liter engine is supposedly still planned, but with around 120 kW, and I think it will likely be slightly modified as well (but how?).'

What do you want us to tell you? Should we just say that the 2.0 is the best, and that the 1.9 was discontinued from the market because of the emission limits you mentioned? Unfortunately, that's simply completely wrong. The 2.0 is certainly a good engine and will follow in the footsteps of the 1.9. But you're already writing that VW made significant changes to increase the power from 130 to 150 hp. What more do you want? It seems like you already understand. If you're getting 30 hp from a tuning box/chip, you can surely answer yourself that it's not likely to extend the engine's lifespan.

Otherwise, I agree with gremlin; they've said it all.

It's not personal; icon_biggrin.gif it would be personal if I called you an old windbag, which I wouldn't even remotely dare to do. icon_wink.gif
Frankly, I would have liked to close the thread after the posts about Gremlins (yes... he is a great stallion!) and Gustav's contribution, otherwise people really never learn. }

Who isn't taking this personally?
I've never encountered a forum as intolerant as this one. It would be best if you posted some FAQs, stopped writing, and simply shut down the forum, as it seems to be accomplishing nothing anyway!

Hi Wacken,

Okay, let's not overreact! We know that some comments from individual forum users might not be very nice. However, you can't let that drag down the entire forum. Several people have already answered your question, and you haven't really acknowledged them. Often, you can tell from the way a question is asked whether someone is genuinely interested in the topic or not. If you had read the relevant articles and other posts in the forum more carefully before asking your question, we wouldn't be having this thread. The only thing that will determine the answer to your question is time; either the device will break down, or it won't.

As I mentioned before, I wasn't looking for information about specific experiences, as that's hardly possible with the engine. But since there are supposedly some professionals here, I thought I might get some more competent answers. Maybe someone knows how the engine is designed, etc. I understand that a chip won't extend the engine's lifespan. Or, to put it another way: What would be the first thing to break (hopefully it won't) with this power output (around 170-175 hp and around 380-400 Nm), or what kind of damage would one most likely encounter (presumably)? Perhaps even in comparison to other TDI engines, which aren't that different either.

Hi Wacken,

Based on my experience, the clutch is likely to fail sooner than usual. Unfortunately, I don't know which type of clutch is currently installed in your car. Other potential issues that might arise with higher mileage include the head gasket and the turbocharger.

Well, I definitely won't drive it for longer than 2 years and 30,000-max. 50,000 km (if at all), it would only be an exception. icon_biggrin.gif
